Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

and spending its nights in prayer. ‘Abd al-Razzāq related (1) from Ma‘mar, from Yahyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from Abū Qilāba, from Abū al-Ash‘ath al-San‘ānī, from Aws ibn Aws, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“Whoever has intercourse with his wife and bathes on Friday, sets out early and arrives early, draws close to the imam and listens silently = will receive, for every step he takes, the reward of a year’s fasting and night prayer. That is easy for Allah.”

Imam Ahmad said: “Ghassala, with the consonant doubled, means having intercourse with one’s wife.” Wakī‘ interpreted it likewise (2).

(1) No. 5570. Also transmitted by Ahmad (16172–16178, 16961, 16962), Abū Dāwūd (345), al-Tirmidhī (496), al-Nasā’ī in al-Mujtabā (1381, 1384, 1384) and al-Kubrā (1697, 1703, 1707, 1719, 1720, 1741), Ibn Mājah (1087), and others, through sound (sahīh) and good (hasan) chains that strengthen one another. Al-Tirmidhī graded the hadith hasan; Ibn Khuzayma (1758, 1767), Ibn Hibbān (2781), and al-Hākim (1/281, 282) graded it sahīh. See also ‘Ilal al-Dāraqutnī (45). Al-Albānī comprehensively examined its transmission routes and corroborating reports in Sahīh Abī Dāwūd—al-Umm (2/176–181). (2) See Ahmad’s interpretation in al-Mughnī (3/167), and Wakī‘’s interpretation, quoted by al-Tirmidhī after hadith 496. Makhūl and Sa‘īd ibn ‘Abd al-‘Azīz interpreted it as: “He washed his head (ghassala) and washed his body (ghasala).” See Sunan Abī Dāwūd (345, 350). This interpretation is supported by Abū Dāwūd’s version (346): “Whoever washes his head on Friday and bathes.” The passage “The Imam said … Wakī‘” occurs only in Qāf, Mīm, and Sād. Curiously, when the copyist of Sād recopied this section, he omitted this passage. In Qāf, it is preceded by: “The Imam also related it in his Musnad.” In Mīm, this sentence originally followed “Wakī‘”; it was then struck out and written in the margin with the mark sahh (“correct”) and an indication that it belonged after yasīr (“easy”), as in Qāf. Its awkwardness in this position is evident. Nūn reads: “Imam Ahmad also related it in his Musnad.” The Indian edition and some other copies read: “Imam Ahmad related in his Musnad; he said: ‘Ghassala …’” This repairs the flow of the text, but the difficulty remains that the statement beginning “Ghassala …” does not occur in the Musnad.
