the two views. If he neglects this, he engages in idle talk, and whoever engages in idle talk has no Friday prayer. In al-Musnad (1), a report traced back to the Prophet states: “And whoever says to his companion, ‘Be quiet,’ has no Friday prayer.”
The tenth distinctive feature: Reciting Surah al-Kahf on Friday. It has been reported from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace:
“Whoever recites Surah al-Kahf on (2) Friday will have a light shine for him from beneath his foot up to the clouds in the sky, giving him light on the Day of Resurrection, and his sins between the two Fridays will be forgiven” (3).
Sa‘īd ibn Mansūr (4) reported it as a statement of Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī, and this attribution is more likely to be correct.
(1) No. (2033), through Ibn Numayr, from Mujālid, from al-Sha‘bī, from Ibn ‘Abbās, from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. It begins: “Whoever speaks on Friday while the imam is delivering the sermon is like a donkey carrying books.” Ibn Abī Shayba (5348) and al-Tabarānī (12/90) also transmitted it through Ibn Numayr with the same chain. Al-Jawraqānī declared it weak because of Mujālid in al-Abātīl wa-l-Manākīr (2/58–59), and identified a defect in it on the basis of the agreed-upon hadith of Abū Hurayra: “If you say to your companion on Friday, ‘Be silent,’ while the imam is delivering the sermon, you have engaged in idle talk.”
(2) The preposition fī (on) is supplied from Jīm, Qāf, Mīm, and Nūn.
(3) Al-Hākim (2/368) and al-Bayhaqī (3/249) transmitted it through Nu‘aym ibn Hammād, from Hushaym ibn Bashīr, from Abū Hāshim al-Rummānī, from Abū Mijlaz, from Qays ibn ‘Ubād, from Abū Sa‘īd, with similar wording, as a marfū‘ report (attributed to the Prophet). Other transmitters differed from Nu‘aym ibn Hammād in this attribution: Sa‘īd ibn Mansūr [Shu‘ab al-Īmān (2220)] and Abū al-Nu‘mān [al-Dārimī (3450)] both transmitted it from Hushaym ibn Bashīr through the same chain as a mawqūf report (a statement of Abū Sa‘īd himself). This is the correct version, as al-Bayhaqī stated in al-Shu‘ab. Hushaym ibn Bashīr alone included the addition “on Friday”; Sufyān al-Thawrī and Shu‘ba differed from him and did not mention it. See Musannaf ‘Abd al-Razzāq (730, 6023), al-Fitan by Nu‘aym ibn Hammād (1579, 1582), al-Sunan al-kubrā by al-Nasā’ī (10723, 10724), al-Hākim (1/564), and al-‘Ilal by al-Dāraqutnī (2301). For further details, see al-Ahādīth al-wārida fī qirā’at Sūrat al-Kahf yawm al-jum‘a by ‘Abd Allāh ibn Fawzān al-Fawzān.
(4) Al-Bayhaqī transmitted it through Sa‘īd ibn Mansūr in Shu‘ab al-Īmān, as noted above. Its being mawqūf does not detract from it, since a statement of this kind cannot be based on personal opinion. However, specifying Friday is not established, as explained in the preceding discussion of the report’s sources.
