Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

He said: The prophets’ young attendants will come out with pulpits of light, and the believers’ young attendants will come out with chairs of ruby. Once these have been set out for them and everyone has taken their place, Allah will send upon them a wind called ‘the Stirring Wind’, which stirs up (1) that musk, carries it beneath their garments, and brings it out onto their faces and hair. That wind knows better how to handle the musk than any of your wives would, even if she were given every perfume on earth.

He said: Then Allah, Blessed and Exalted, will reveal to the bearers of His Throne: ‘Set it among them.’ The first thing they will hear from Him will be: ‘Come to Me, My servants who obeyed Me in the unseen, though they had not seen Me, believed My messengers, and followed My command. Ask, for this is the Day of Increase.’ They will agree upon a single declaration (2): ‘We are pleased (3) with You, so be pleased with us.’ Allah will respond to them: ‘O people of Paradise, had I not been pleased with you, I would not have settled you in My abode. So ask Me, for this is the Day of Increase.’ They will unite in one request: ‘Our Lord, let us behold Your Face.’ He will remove those veils and manifest Himself to them, Almighty and Majestic. Something of His light will envelop them; were it not that He (4) had decreed that (5) they should not burn, they would burn from the light that envelops them.

Then they will be told: ‘Return to your dwellings.’ They will return to their dwellings, after He has given

(1) Jīm, Mīm-Bā: “tanthur” (“scatters”). (2) This is the reading in all the manuscripts, with the accusative marked in most of them. However, the written form of the verb in Kāf and ‘Ayn also permits the reading “fayajtami‘ūn” (“they gather”). The printed editions and editions of Sifat al-janna (Description of Paradise) read “fayajtami‘ūn ‘alā” (“they agree upon”), as will appear below. (3) Kāf and ‘Ayn add after this: “rabbanā” (“Our Lord”). (4) Jīm: “anna Allāh” (“that Allah”). (5) Kāf, ‘Ayn: “annahum” (“that they”).
