So I asked, “What is this spot I see in it?” He replied, “This is Friday.” I asked, “And what is Friday?” He replied, “It is a great day among the days of your Lord. I shall tell you of its honour and excellence in this world, what its people may hope for on it, and its name in the Hereafter.

“As for its honour and excellence in this world (1), Allah, Almighty and Majestic, brought together the affairs of creation on it. As for what its people may hope for on it, there is an hour during which no Muslim man or woman asks Allah for anything good without His granting it to them. As for its honour and excellence in the Hereafter and its name, when Allah, Blessed and Exalted, admits the people of Paradise into Paradise and the people of the Fire into the Fire, these days and nights pass over them, although there is neither night nor day there. Allah, Almighty and Majestic, makes known (2) their duration and hours.

“When Friday comes, at the time when those attending the Friday prayer go out to it, a caller addresses the people of Paradise: ‘O people of Paradise, come out to the Valley of Increase!’ None but Allah knows the extent, length (3), and breadth of the Valley of Increase. Within it (4) are dunes of musk whose summits reach into the sky.

(1) The passage “wa-mā yurjā … al-dunyā” (“what may be hoped for … this world”) is omitted from Sād and Mīm-Bā because of a copyist’s eye-skip. (2) Al-Fiqī changed it to “illā qad ‘alima” (“except that He already knew”); the al-Risāla edition followed him. (3) This is the reading in Sād and Sifat al-janna (Description of Paradise). The other manuscripts read “sa‘at tūlihi” (“the extent of its length”). (4) “Fīhi” (“within it”) is omitted from Kāf and supplied in ‘Ayn.

فقلت: ما هذه اللُّمعة التي أرى فيها؟ قال: هذه الجمعة. قلت: وما الجمعة؟ قال: يومٌ من أيام ربك عظيمٌ، وسأخبرك بشرفه وفضله في الدنيا، وما يُرجى فيه لأهله، وأخبرك باسمه في الآخرة. فأما شرفه وفضله في الدنيا (١)، فإنَّ الله ﷿ جمَع فيه أمرَ الخلق. وأما ما يرجى فيه لأهله، فإنَّ فيه ساعةً لا يوافقها عبد مسلم أو أمة مسلمة يسأل الله فيها خيرًا إلا أعطاهما إياه. وأما شرفه وفضله في الآخرة واسمه فإن الله ﵎ إذا صيَّر أهل الجنة إلى الجنة وأهلَ النار إلى النار جرَت عليهم هذه الأيامُ وهذه الليالي، ليس فيها ليل ولا نهار، فأعلَمَ (٢) الله ﷿ مقدار ذلك وساعاته. فإذا كان يومُ الجمعة حين يخرج أهل الجمعة إلى جمعتهم نادى أهلَ الجنة منادٍ: يا أهل الجنة، اخرجوا إلى وادي المزيد. ووادي المزيد لا يعلم سعتَه وطوله (٣) وعرضه إلا الله، فيه (٤) كُثبانُ المسك رؤوسُها في السماء.
