“Friday is among the best of your days. On it Adam was created, and on it his soul was taken; on it the Trumpet will be blown, and on it creatures will be struck down. So send abundant blessings upon me on that day, for your blessings are presented to me.” They asked, “O Messenger of Allah, how will our blessings be presented to you when you have decomposed?” (meaning: decayed). He replied, “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has forbidden the earth to consume the bodies of the prophets.” Al-Hākim and Ibn Hibbān also narrated it in their respective Sahīh collections (1).
In Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī (2), Abū Hurayra reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday. On it Adam was created, on it he was admitted to Paradise, and on it he was expelled from it. The Hour will occur only on a Friday.”
Al-Tirmidhī said, “This is a good and authentic hadith.” Al-Hākim also graded it authentic (3).
Also in his Sahīh (4), Abū Hurayra reports a narration traced back to the Prophet: “The foremost of days is the day of
(1) Here al-Fiqī altered the text to read: “Al-Hākim in al-Mustadrak and Ibn Hibbān in his Sahīh.” The al-Risāla edition followed him.
(2) No. 488, with Muslim’s chain of transmission. Muslim also included it in his Sahīh (854/18).
(3) Al-Mustadrak (2/544). This is not the same hadith, either in its chain of transmission or its text. Muslim’s inclusion of the hadith in his Sahīh makes this reference unnecessary.
(4) Changed in the al-Risāla edition to “al-Mustadrak.” Al-Hākim reported it (1/277) and graded it authentic, arguing that Muslim had relied on Ibn Abī al-Zinād as an authoritative transmitter. In fact, Muslim narrated from him in the introduction to his book (his father’s statement on the importance of the chain of transmission), as al-Mizzī noted in Tahdhīb al-Kamāl (17/101). Ibn Khuzayma (1706) and Ibn al-Mundhir in al-Awsat (4/5) also reported it, all through ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Abī al-Zinād, from his father, from Mūsā ibn Abī ‘Uthmān, from Abū Hurayra. Ibn Abī al-Zinād is somewhat weak as a transmitter, and reports he alone transmits are not accepted. Ibn Khuzayma said: “We erred in including this hadith, because it is mursal (disconnected): Mūsā ibn Abī ‘Uthmān did not hear from Abū Hurayra.” This demonstrates Ibn Khuzayma’s superior mastery compared with his contemporaries and the later compilers of Sahīh collections.
