that brought him joy, he would fall prostrate before Allah in gratitude to Allah, blessed and exalted is He.
Ibn Mājah (1) relates from Anas that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) received good news concerning a need of his and fell (2) in prostration.
Al-Bayhaqī (3) relates, with a chain of transmission (4) meeting al-Bukhārī’s criteria, that when ‘Alī wrote to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informing him that Hamdān had embraced Islam, he fell in prostration. He then raised his head and said: “Peace be upon Hamdān! Peace be upon Hamdān!” The opening portion of this hadith appears in Sahīh al-Bukhārī; this is its concluding portion, recorded by al-Bayhaqī with its chain of transmission.
Al-Musnad (5) reports, in a hadith narrated by ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn ‘Awf, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)
(1) No. 1392, with a weak chain of transmission that includes Ibn Lahī‘ah.
(2) mb and n add “li-llāh” (to Allah) after this word, as do the Maymaniyyah edition and subsequent editions.
(3) In al-Sunan al-Kubrā (2/369), Ma‘rifat al-Sunan (3/316), and Dalā’il al-Nubuwwah (5/396). Also transmitted by Abū Bakr al-Rūyānī in his Musnad (304), through two hasan (fair) routes from Ibrāhīm ibn Yūsuf ibn Abī Ishāq al-Sabī‘ī, from his father, from his grandfather Abū Ishāq, from al-Barā’ ibn ‘Āzib. Al-Bukhārī transmitted the opening portion of this hadith (4349) through his chain to Ibrāhīm ibn Yūsuf, with the same subsequent chain.
(4) k reads “bi-isnādihi” (with his chain of transmission). The manuscript designated ‘ayn originally had the same reading, but it was corrected.
(5) Nos. 1662–1664. Also transmitted by Abū Ya‘lā (847, 858, 869), al-Hākim (1/222, 550), al-Bayhaqī (2/370, 371; 9/285), and al-Diyā’ in al-Mukhtārah (3/126), through routes whose combined strength renders the hadith hasan (fair). Some of its routes contain discrepancies and inconsistencies. See al-Dāraqutnī’s al-‘Ilal (577), al-Badr al-Munīr (4/274), Irwā’ al-Ghalīl (2/228–230), and the annotations by the editors of al-Musnad.
