Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

They said: Further support for this is the authentic report from Anas that a man of large build from among the Ansār said (1) to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), “I cannot pray with you.” He prepared food for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), invited him to his home, and sprinkled one edge of a mat with water for him. The Prophet then prayed two units of prayer on it. Anas said, “I never saw him offer the midmorning prayer except on that day.” Al-Bukhārī narrated it (2).

Anyone who examines the hadiths traced back to the Prophet and the reports from the Companions will find that they support only this view. As for the hadiths encouraging and recommending this prayer, the authentic ones, such as the reports of Abū Hurayrah and Abū Dharr, do not indicate that it is a sunnah to be observed regularly by everyone. He recommended it to Abū Hurayrah specifically because, as has been reported, Abū Hurayrah preferred studying hadith at night to praying (3). He therefore instructed him to offer the midmorning prayer in place of the night prayer. This is also why he instructed him not to sleep before offering witr, whereas he did not give this instruction to Abū Bakr, ‘Umar, or the other Companions.

The chains of transmission of most hadiths on this subject are open to criticism. Some have disconnected chains, while others are fabricated and may not be used as evidence, such as the report attributed to the Prophet through Anas: “Whoever consistently observes the midmorning prayer, interrupting it only for an excuse, will be with me in a boat of light upon a sea of light” (4)—fabricated by Zakariyyā ibn Duwayd (5) al-Kindī on the authority of Humayd—and the report (6)

Zakariyyā ibn Duwayd was a liar; see Ibn Hibbān’s al-Majrūhīn (1/314–315) and Mīzān al-I‘tidāl (2/72). (5) All manuscripts except Jīm read “Durayd,” which is a textual corruption.
