Abū Mijlaz used to offer the midmorning prayer in his home (1).
Those holding this view said: This is preferable, lest regularly observing it lead someone to suppose that it is obligatory or an established regular sunnah. Thus ‘Ā’ishah said: “Even if my parents (2) were brought back to life for me, I would not abandon it (3)” (4). She used to offer it at home, where people could not see her.
A fourth group held that this prayer is offered only for a particular reason, and that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, only offered it for a reason. They said (5): His offering eight rak‘ahs in midmorning on the day of the conquest was (6) solely on account of the conquest, and the sunnah upon a conquest is to offer eight rak‘ahs,
(1) Recorded by Ibn Abī Shaybah (7882). This is the last of the reports from the early generations cited by al-Tabarī and reproduced by the author from Ibn Battāl’s book.
(2) All manuscripts have this reading, with a doubled yāʾ, although most also vocalize the verb as nushira (“were brought back to life”), in the passive! This is anomalous, since the alif of the dual ending does not become yāʾ when the first-person possessive suffix is attached. The sources recording the report have the regular form abawāy (“my parents”).
(3) All manuscripts except Kāf and ‘Ayn read taraktuhumā (“I abandoned the two”), and likewise tusallīhimā (“she prayed the two”). This is a scribal error, since the hadith itself states that she used to pray eight rak‘ahs.
(4) Recorded by Mālik (418) and ‘Abd al-Razzāq (4866), through Zayd ibn Aslam from her, as a mursal report. Al-Bukhārī recorded it in al-Tārīkh al-Awsat (The Middle History), 2/948–949; Abū Ya‘lā (4612) and al-Nasāʾī in al-Kubrā (The Larger Collection), 484–485, recorded it with a connected chain through Rumaythah from ‘Āʾishah. Al-Dāraqutnī said in al-‘Ilal (Hadith Defects), 3782: “Perhaps Zayd ibn Aslam received it from Rumaythah. Allah knows best.”

(6) Sād reads kāna (“was”).
