Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

Abū al-ʿAbbās; Muhammad ibn Ishāq al-Saghānī (1) narrated to us; Abū al-Muwarriʿ Muhādir ibn al-Muwarriʿ narrated to us; Abū al-Ahwas (2) ibn Hakīm narrated to us; ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿĀmir (3) al-Alhānī narrated to me, from Munīb, from ʿUtbah ibn ʿAbd (4) al-Sulamī and from Abū Umāmah (5), who reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to say:

“Whoever performs the dawn prayer in a congregational mosque, then remains there until he offers the midmorning prayer (6) there, then performs (7) the midmorning prayer—will have a reward like that of a pilgrim performing Hajj or umrah, whose Hajj and umrah are complete.”

Ibn Abī Shaybah (8) said: Hātim ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to me, from Humayd ibn Sakhr,

(1) The manuscripts read “al-San‘ānī,” a scribal error. (2) Thus in the manuscripts; the word “Abū” appears to be an interpolation. (3) This reading occurs in some sources. Al-‘Ijlī, in al-Thiqāt (2/40), and others point out that the correct reading is Ghābir. (4) Mb: “Munīb ibn ‘Uyaynah ibn ‘Abd Allāh”; likewise in the Maymaniyyah edition and subsequent editions. (5) Al-Hāfiz cites this chain in al-Isābah (10/342), through al-Ahwas ibn Hakīm, with the same subsequent chain, including: “Munīb ibn ‘Abd al-Sulamī—who was one of the Companions—from Abū Umāmah, attributing it to the Prophet: ‘Whoever prays …’” He then gives this hadith. The additional name “Munīb” does not occur in the sources. (6) The phrase yasabbihu fīhi subhatan (offers a voluntary prayer there) is omitted from the printed editions. (7) Q, M, Mb, N: yusallī (performs prayer). The following word, subhah (voluntary prayer), is omitted from M, Mb, and N. (8) Transmitted through him by Abū Ya‘lā (6559, 6473), and subsequently through Abū Ya‘lā by Ibn Hibbān (2535). Also transmitted through ‘Uthmān ibn Abī Shaybah by Ibn ‘Adī in al-Kāmil, in the entry on Humayd ibn Sakhr (3/402), and by Ibn Shāhīn in al-Targhīb (p. 48), from Hātim ibn Ismā‘īl, with the same subsequent chain. All transmission routes for this hadith converge on Humayd ibn Sakhr, who has some weakness; Ibn Ma‘īn, al-Nasā’ī, and others declared him weak. At the end of his entry, after citing some of his hadiths, including this one, Ibn ‘Adī states: “Hātim ibn Ismā‘īl transmits other hadiths from Humayd ibn Sakhr besides those I have mentioned. In some of these hadiths from al-Maqburī and Yazīd al-Raqāshī, he transmits material for which he has no corroboration.” See also Mīzān al-i‘tidāl (1/613).
