Al-Hākim (1) also said: Abū Ahmad Bakr (2) ibn Muhammad al-Marwazī informed us: Abū Qilābah narrated to us: Abū al-Walīd (3) narrated to us: Abū ‘Awānah narrated to us, from Husayn ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmān, from ‘Amr ibn Murrah, from ‘Umārah ibn ‘Umayr (4), from the son of Jubayr ibn Mut‘im, from his father, who saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performing the midmorning prayer.
Al-Hākim (5) also said: Ismā‘īl ibn Nujayd (6) narrated to us: Muhammad ibn
(1) In the aforementioned work. Also recorded by Ibn Abī Shaybah (2412), Ibn Nasr al-Marwazī in Qiyām al-Layl (p. 114), and al-Tabarānī (2/135), all through Husayn, from ‘Amr ibn Murrah, from ‘Ammār ibn ‘Āsim, from Nāfi‘ ibn Jubayr ibn Mut‘im, from his father, with the same report. Thus, “‘Umārah ibn ‘Umayr” in this chain is an error. This is supported by al-Bukhārī’s statement in al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr (6/488), after mentioning some differences in the hadith’s transmission: “Abū al-Walīd said: Abū ‘Awānah narrated to us, from Husayn, from ‘Amr, who heard ‘Ammār ibn ‘Āsim al-‘Anazī, who heard Nāfi‘, from his father, may Allah be pleased with him … This is not authentic.” Al-Dāraqutnī discussed its transmission routes at length in al-‘Ilal (3321), saying: “The correct version is that of those who narrated it from ‘Āsim al-‘Anazī, from Nāfi‘ ibn Jubayr, from his father, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.” I say: Ahmad (16784), Abū Dāwūd (764), and Ibn Mājah (807) recorded it through this route; this ‘Āsim al-‘Anazī is an unknown narrator. Nevertheless, Ibn al-Mulaqqin graded the hadith authentic in al-Badr al-Munīr (3/534), and al-Hāfiz graded it hasan (good) in Natā’ij al-Afkār (1/412), but al-Albānī graded it weak in Da‘īf Abī Dāwūd—al-Umm (9/296).
(2) A marginal note in ع states that one copy reads: “Abū Bakr Ahmad.”
(3) All copies except Q, M, and Mb read “Ibn al-Walīd,” a scribal error.
(4) Thus in all copies. See the discussion of the hadith’s sources.
(5) Also recorded by al-Bukhārī in al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr (1/212) and al-Tabarānī in al-Awsat (2724) and Musnad al-Shāmiyyīn (2470), through several routes from Muhammad ibn Qays, with the same report. All these chains converge on him, and he is an unknown narrator.
(6) The printed editions read “Muhammad,” an error.
