Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

Abū al-‘Abbās al-Asamm narrated to us: Usayd (1) ibn ‘Āsim narrated to us: al-Husayn (2) ibn Hafs narrated to us, from Sufyān, from ‘Umar (3) ibn Dharr, from Mujāhid, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performed the midmorning prayer as two, four, six, and eight rak‘ahs (4).

Imam Ahmad (5) said: Abū Sa‘īd, a client of Banū Hāshim, narrated to us: ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Abd al-Malik al-‘Umarī narrated to us: ‘Ā’ishah bint Sa‘d narrated to us, from Umm Durrah (6), who said: “I saw ‘Ā’ishah performing the midmorning prayer and saying: ‘I only ever saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, pray four rak‘ahs.’”

(1) Mb and the printed editions read “Asad,” a scribal error. (2) The printed editions read “al-Husayn” (with sād rather than sīn), a corrupted reading. (3) Q and M read “‘Amr.” K also had this reading, but it appears to have been obliterated. (4) Also recorded by ‘Abd al-Razzāq (4852)—where “‘Umar ibn Dharr” was corrupted to “‘Amr ibn Dīnār”—and Ishāq ibn Rāhawayh (1390), through ‘Umar ibn Dharr, with the same report. It is an authentic mursal report (attributed directly to the Prophet by a Successor). (5) No. (24745). Also recorded through him by al-Tabarānī in al-Mu‘jam al-Awsat (4296) and Abū Nu‘aym in Hilyat al-Awliyā’ (9/277). Al-Tabarānī said: “This hadith is narrated from Umm Dharrah only through this chain; Ahmad ibn Hanbal alone transmitted it—may Allah have mercy on him and be pleased with him.” There is a break in its chain between ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Abd al-Malik al-‘Umarī—whose correct name is ‘Uthmān ibn Muhammad al-‘Umarī—and ‘Ā’ishah bint Sa‘d. See al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr (6/250). The hadith is munkar (rejected), because it contradicts another authentic hadith narrated by Mu‘ādhah from ‘Ā’ishah: “How many rak‘ahs did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, pray at midmorning?” She replied: “Four rak‘ahs, and he would add as many as Allah, Mighty and Majestic, willed.” Recorded by Ahmad (24638) and Ishāq (1389). (6) All manuscripts have the undotted letter dāl (d), vocalized with u in all except J. The correct reading has the dotted letter dhāl (dh): “Umm Dharrah.” She was a freedwoman of ‘Ā’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her.
