Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

and mīm is a letter.” Reported by al-Tirmidhī (1), who graded it authentic.

They further argue that ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān recited the Quran in a single unit of prayer (2), and they cite reports from many of the early generations concerning abundant recitation (3).

The correct position on this question is that the reward for measured recitation with reflection is nobler and higher in worth, whereas the reward for abundant recitation is greater in number. The former is like someone who gives a jewel in charity

(1) No. 2910. Also recorded by al-Bukhārī in al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr (1/216), who said: “I do not know whether he retained it accurately”—meaning Muhammad ibn Ka‘b. Al-Tirmidhī said: “This hadith is also transmitted from Ibn Mas‘ūd through another route. Abū al-Ahwas narrated it from Ibn Mas‘ūd; some narrators attributed it to the Prophet, while others transmitted it as a statement of Ibn Mas‘ūd himself. This hadith is hasan sahīh (good and authentic) and gharīb (singular) through this route. I heard Qutayba ibn Sa‘īd say: ‘I have been informed that Muhammad ibn Ka‘b al-Qurazī was born during the Prophet’s lifetime, peace and blessings be upon him.’” The report through Abū al-Ahwas was recorded by Ibn al-Durays in Fadā’il al-Qur’ān (p. 46), al-Ājurrī in Akhlāq Ahl al-Qur’ān (p. 52), and al-Hākim (1/555). Al-Albānī also graded the hadith authentic in al-Sahīha (3327). Al-Dāraqutnī extensively enumerated its transmission routes in his ‘Ilal (919) and preferred the mawqūf version (the report ascribed to Ibn Mas‘ūd himself). For the mawqūf version, see Musannaf ‘Abd al-Razzāq (5993, 6017), Sunan Sa‘īd ibn Mansūr (4, 6, 7, in the tafsīr section), Musannaf Ibn Abī Shayba (30552, 30554, 30555), and Sunan al-Dārimī (3351, 3358, 3365). (2) Recorded by ‘Abd al-Razzāq (4653), Ibn Abī Shayba (3710, 3720), and al-Bayhaqī (3/24–25), through several routes from ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn ‘Uthmān al-Taymī, in an account of an incident involving him and ‘Uthmān, may Allah be pleased with him, concerning night prayer. Its chain of transmission is authentic. (3) See Musannaf ‘Abd al-Razzāq (2/146, “Reciting Surahs in a Single Rak‘a [Unit of Prayer]”; 3/351, “When You Hear a Verse of Prostration While Praying, and How Long to Take to Recite the Quran”) and Musannaf Ibn Abī Shayba (3/254, “Those Who Permitted Combining Surahs in a Single Rak‘a”; 5/513, “Those Who Permitted Reciting the Quran in One Night or in a Single Rak‘a”), as well as other chapters.
