Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

And al-Nasā’ī (1) added in his narration: “May Allah bless the Prophet.”

Al-Hākim also narrated it (2) in al-Mustadrak (3), with the wording: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, taught me to say this in my witr prayer when I raise my head and only prostration remains.”

Ibn Hibbān narrated it in his Sahīh (4), with the wording: “I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, supplicating…”

Al-Tirmidhī (5) said: There is also a report from ‘Alī on this subject. This is a good hadith; we know it only through this chain, from Abū al-Hawrā’ (6) al-Sa‘dī, whose name is Rabī‘ah ibn Shaybān. Nothing (7) better than this is known to have been reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, concerning qunūt in witr.

(1) Al-Mujtabā (no. 1746) and al-Kubrā (no. 1447), through ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Alī, from al-Hasan ibn ‘Alī, reporting the same hadith. It includes: “May Allah bless Muhammad the Prophet.” Its chain includes ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Alī ibn al-Husayn, who has some weakness. Al-Hāfiz stated in al-Tahdhīb (5/325): “As for his narration from al-Hasan ibn ‘Alī, it has not been established.” Al-Albānī likewise judged him weak. (2) All witnesses except Sād and Jīm read: “wa-zāda (and he added).” (3) 3/172—and through him, al-Bayhaqī (3/38)—through Abū Bakr ibn Shaybah al-Hizāmī, from Ibn Abī Fudayk, from Ismā‘īl ibn Ibrāhīm ibn ‘Uqbah, from Mūsā ibn ‘Uqbah, from Hishām ibn ‘Urwah, from his father, from ‘Ā’ishah, from al-Hasan ibn ‘Alī, reporting the same hadith. Al-Hizāmī alone transmitted this wording. Al-Bukhārī selected only two of his hadiths, and he has some weakness. (4) No. 722. Its continuation reads: “Supplicating with this prayer: O Allah, guide us …” It contains no mention of qunūt (supplication) in witr (the odd-numbered night prayer), as previously explained in the detailed discussion of its transmission sources. Ibn Hibbān inclined to this view. (5) In al-Jāmi‘, following no. 464. (6) The name was corrupted in Sād to “al-Jawn,” and in Qāf, Kāf, and ‘Ayn to “al-Jawzā’.” (7) Thus in all manuscript copies. The printed edition of al-Jāmi‘ reads: “wa-lā na‘rifu … shay’an (and we do not know … anything).”
