His night prayer took three forms. The first—and the most frequent (1)—was to pray standing. The second was to pray sitting and bow while seated (2). The third was to recite while seated, then, when only a little of his recitation remained, rise and bow from a standing position (3). All three forms are authentically reported from him.
As for how he sat when sitting in place of standing (4), al-Nasā’ī’s Sunan (5) contains a report from ‘Abd Allāh ibn Shaqīq, from ‘Ā’ishah, who said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, praying cross-legged.” Al-Nasā’ī said: “I know of no one who narrated this hadith other than Abū Dāwūd—meaning al-Hafrī. Abū Dāwūd is a reliable narrator, yet I cannot but think that this hadith is mistaken. And Allah knows best (6).”
(1) k, ‘: “akthar (more frequent).”
(2) Reported by Muslim (730), from ‘Ā’ishah.
(3) Reported by al-Bukhārī (1118, 1119), from ‘Ā’ishah.
(4) s, j: “hālla mahalla al-qiyām (taking the place of standing).”
(5) Al-Mujtabā (1661) and al-Kubrā (1367), and through al-Nasā’ī, al-Dāraqutnī (1482). Also reported by Ibn Khuzaymah (978, 1238), Ibn Hibbān (2512), al-Hākim (1/275), and al-Bayhaqī (2/305), through several chains from Abū Dāwūd al-Hafrī, from Hafs ibn Ghiyāth, from Humayd al-Tawīl, from ‘Abd Allāh ibn Shaqīq, with this report. These remarks by al-Nasā’ī appear in al-Mujtabā. Muhammad ibn Sa‘īd al-Asbahānī also transmitted it from the same teacher, as recorded by al-Hākim (1/258) and al-Bayhaqī (2/305). After mentioning al-Asbahānī’s corroboration of al-Hafrī’s narration, al-Hāfiz stated in al-Talkhīs (2/639): “It thus becomes clear that there is no error in it.” Ibn ‘Abd al-Hādī indicated much the same in al-Muharrar, after (396). However, responsibility for the error lies with their teacher, Hafs ibn Ghiyāth; see the following note.
(6) Supporting his criticism of the report is the statement of Muhammad ibn Nasr al-Marwazī: “None of the reports we have narrated concerning the Prophet’s praying seated, peace and blessings be upon him, = describes how he sat, except a hadith transmitted from Hafs ibn Ghiyāth in which Hafs made an error. Abū Dāwūd al-Hafrī narrated it from him, from Humayd, from ‘Abd Allāh ibn Shaqīq, from ‘Ā’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her: ‘I saw the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, praying cross-legged.’” He said: “Several narrators transmitted the hadith about praying seated from Humayd, from ‘Abd Allāh ibn Shaqīq, just as others transmitted it from ‘Abd Allāh ibn Shaqīq, may Allah have mercy on him, without any mention of sitting cross-legged.” He then discussed the matter in detail and cited reports from the Companions concerning praying cross-legged.
