Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

The sixth form: He would pray seven rak‘ahs in the same manner as the nine just described, then pray two rak‘ahs seated (1).

The seventh form: He would pray two rak‘ahs at a time, then perform witr with three consecutive rak‘ahs. Imam Ahmad (2) narrated this from ‘Ā’ishah: he would perform witr with three rak‘ahs without a break between them. Al-Nasā’ī (3) also narrated from her: “He would not give the concluding salutation after the two rak‘ahs of witr.” This manner of praying is open to question, for Abū Hātim ibn Hibbān narrated in his Sahīh (4), from Abū Hurayrah, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

(1) The word “jālisan (seated)” is supplied from k and ‘a. Both also have “ba‘dahā (afterwards)” before “rak‘atayn (two rak‘ahs).” (2) I did not find in Ahmad’s collection the wording “with three [rak‘ahs], without a break between them.” Rather, he reported it (26358) with the wording: “He would perform witr with five [rak‘ahs], without sitting during them …” (3) Al-Mujtabā (1698) and al-Kubrā (1404). It was also reported by Ibn Abī Shaybah (6912), Ibn Nasr in Kitāb al-Witr (p. 291), al-Tabarānī in al-Awsat (6661) and al-Saghīr (990), al-Dāraqutnī (1665), and al-Bayhaqī (3/31), all through Sa‘īd ibn Abī ‘Arūbah, from Qatādah, from Zurārah ibn Awfā, from Sa‘d ibn Hishām, from ‘Ā’ishah, with this report. This version differs from the well-known version. Al-Albānī graded it weak and discussed it in detail in al-Irwā’ (421). (4) No. 2429, through ‘Abd Allāh ibn Wahb, from Sulaymān ibn Bilāl, from Sālih ibn Kaysān, from ‘Abd Allāh ibn al-Fadl, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, with this report. Al-Dāraqutnī also reported it (1650), saying: “All of them are trustworthy.” Al-Hāfiz said in al-Talkhīs (2/865): “Its narrators are all trustworthy, and the fact that some stop its chain at the Companion does not detract from it.” He also said in al-Fath (2/481): “Its chain meets the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.” However, Ibn Rajab said in Fath al-Bārī (6/160): “There is an objectionable element in its attribution to the Prophet,” then cited reports transmitted from the Companions. Ibn Nasr also reported it in Kitāb al-Witr (p. 300), as did Ibn al-Mundhir in al-Awsat (5/180), both from Tāhir ibn ‘Amr ibn al-Rabī‘ ibn Tāriq, who said: “My father narrated to us: al-Layth ibn Sa‘d narrated to us, saying: Yazīd ibn Abī Habīb narrated to me, from ‘Irāk ibn Mālik, from Abū Hurayrah,” with this report. Its narrators are trustworthy except for Tāhir ibn ‘Amr, the teacher of Ibn Nasr and Ibn al-Mundhir: I found neither a critical nor a favorable assessment of him.
