“Whoever prays two rak‘ahs after the sunset prayer before speaking will have his prayer raised to ‘Illiyyīn” (1); and because this joins the voluntary prayer directly to the obligatory prayer (2). End of quotation.
The second Sunnah practice is to perform it at home. Al-Nasā’ī, Abū Dāwūd, and al-Tirmidhī (3) narrated from Ka‘b ibn ‘Ujrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the mosque of Banū ‘Abd al-Ashhal and performed the sunset prayer there. When they had finished their prayer, he saw them performing voluntary prayers afterward and said: “This is a prayer to be performed at home.” Ibn Mājah (4) narrated it from Rāfi‘ ibn Khadīj with the wording: “Perform these two rak‘ahs in your homes.”
(1) Reported by ‘Abd al-Razzāq (4833), Ibn Abī Shaybah (5986), and Abū Dāwūd in al-Marāsīl (73).
(2) This paragraph also appears in al-Badā’i‘ (4/1510).
(3) Al-Nasā’ī (1600), Abū Dāwūd (1300), and al-Tirmidhī (604). Also reported by al-Bukhārī in al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr (1/178) and Ibn Khuzaymah (1200). Its chain includes Ishāq ibn Ka‘b ibn ‘Ujrah, an unknown narrator (majhūl). Al-Tirmidhī graded the hadith as weak and said: “The sound version is what was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar, who said: ‘The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to pray the two rak‘ahs after Maghrib at home.’” Ibn ‘Umar’s hadith is reported by both al-Bukhārī and Muslim and has already been cited. Ka‘b’s hadith has a corroborating report narrated by Mahmūd ibn Labīd, which will be discussed when documenting the sources of the following hadith.
(4) No. 1165; also reported by al-Tabarānī (4295). Their narrations come through two chains, both containing some weakness, from Ismā‘īl ibn ‘Ayyāsh, from Muhammad ibn Ishāq, from ‘Āsim ibn ‘Umar ibn Qatādah, from Mahmūd ibn Labīd, from Rāfi‘ ibn Khadīj, with this report. Ismā‘īl is weak when narrating from transmitters other than Syrians, and Ibn Ishāq was from Medina. Further evidence of its weakness is the report transmitted by Ibn Abī Shaybah (6433), Ahmad (23624), and Ibn Khuzaymah (1200) through sound chains from Ibn Ishāq, from ‘Āsim ibn ‘Umar, from Mahmūd ibn Labīd—may Allah be pleased with him—from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, without mentioning Rāfi‘ ibn Khadīj—may Allah be pleased with him. In Ahmad’s version, Ibn Ishāq explicitly states that he heard the report directly. Thus, the hadith is fair (hasan) or sound (sahīh) as a report narrated by Mahmūd ibn Labīd.
