Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

and pray facing its rear upright (1). He instructed anyone praying to use a prayer barrier, even if only an arrow or a stick; if none was available, he was to draw a line on the ground (2).

Abū Dāwūd (3) said: “I heard Ahmad ibn Hanbal say: ‘The line should be drawn crosswise, like a crescent.’” ‘Abd Allāh ibn Dāwūd (4) said: “The line should be drawn lengthwise.” As for a stick, it should be set upright.

(1) Reported by al-Bukhārī (507) and Muslim (502) from ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Umar. (2) Reported by Ahmad (7394), Abū Dāwūd (689), Ibn Mājah (943), Ibn Khuzaymah (811), Ibn Hibbān (2361, 2376), and al-Bayhaqī (2:270–271) from Abū Hurayrah. Ismā‘īl ibn Umayyah transmitted its chain with considerable inconsistency, which al-Mizzī described and discussed in detail. See Tahdhīb al-Kamāl (5:567) and al-Dāraqutnī’s al-‘Ilal (2010). In Ibn Abī Hātim’s al-‘Ilal (534), Abū Zur‘ah judged the correct version to be that transmitted by al-Thawrī from Ismā‘īl ibn Umayyah, from Abū ‘Amr ibn Hurayth, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah. This Abū ‘Amr is an unknown narrator. Following the hadith, Abū Dāwūd quoted Ibn al-Madīnī as reporting that Sufyān ibn ‘Uyaynah said: “We have found nothing to corroborate this hadith, and it has been transmitted only through this route.” In al-Kubrā and Ma‘rifat al-Sunan (3:191), al-Bayhaqī quoted al-Shāfi‘ī’s statement in al-Buwaytī (p. 159): “A person praying should not draw a line in front of himself unless there is an established hadith concerning this, in which case it should be followed.” See also al-Talkhīs al-Habīr (2:823–824). Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr reported that Ahmad and Ibn al-Madīnī graded the hadith authentic; see al-Tamhīd (4:198–200) and al-Istidhkār (6:174–175). However, al-Hāfiz said in Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb (12:181): “Al-Khallāl reported that Ahmad said: ‘The hadith concerning the line is weak.’” The hadith was also graded weak by al-Nawawī in Khulāsat al-Ahkām (1:520), Ibn ‘Abd al-Hādī in al-Muharrar (283), and al-Albānī in Da‘īf Abī Dāwūd—al-Umm (1:239). (3) Following hadith (690). (4) “Ibn Dāwūd” is omitted from the printed editions. He is al-Khuraybī, from whom Musaddad transmitted the hadith to Abū Dāwūd.
