Muhammad ibn Himyar alone transmitted this hadith from Muhammad ibn Ziyād al-Alhānī, from Abū Umāmah. Al-Nasā’ī related it from al-Husayn ibn Bishr, from Muhammad ibn Himyar. Some consider this hadith authentic (1), saying: Al-Nasā’ī said of al-Husayn ibn Bishr (2), “There is nothing wrong with him,” and elsewhere declared him trustworthy (3). As for the two Muhammads, al-Bukhārī relied on both as authorities in his Sahīh. Thus, they say, the hadith conforms to his standards.
Others say: On the contrary (4), it is fabricated. Abū al-Faraj ibn al-Jawzī included it in his book al-Mawdū‘āt (Fabricated Hadiths) (5), resting his case on Muhammad ibn Himyar and citing Abū Hātim al-Rāzī’s statement, “He cannot be relied upon as an authority,” and Ya‘qūb ibn Sufyān’s statement, “He is not strong.” This was disputed
