and virtuous character, for none guides to what is good in them or wards off what is evil in them (1) but You.”
Ibn Hibbān related in his Sahīh (2) that al-Hārith ibn Muslim al-Tamīmī said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me:
“When you have offered the dawn prayer, say seven times, before speaking: ‘O Allah, protect me from the Fire.’ If you die that day, Allah will record for you protection from the Fire. And when you have offered the sunset prayer, say seven times, before speaking: ‘O Allah, protect me from the Fire.’ If you die that night, Allah will record for you protection from the Fire (3).”
Al-Nasā’ī related in al-Kabīr (4), from Abū Umāmah, who said: The Messenger of Allah said
(1) Here too, the two editors of the al-Risāla edition altered the text, printing: “to what is good in them but You, and none wards off what is evil in them,” as found in the printed edition of al-Mustadrak.
(2) No. 2022, with fuller wording. An abridged version was also transmitted by Ahmad (18054), Abū Dāwūd (5079), al-Nasā’ī in al-Kubrā (9859), and al-Tabarānī in al-Kabīr (19:433) and al-Du‘ā’ (665). All transmit it through ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Hassān al-Kinānī, from Muslim ibn al-Hārith (or al-Hārith ibn Muslim—the name is disputed), from his father, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Al-Barqānī (p. 68, ed. Majdī) asked al-Dāraqutnī about these narrators, and he replied: “‘Abd al-Rahmān is from Homs; there is nothing objectionable about him. Muslim is of unknown standing.” Al-Albānī graded the hadith as weak and discussed it in detail; see al-Da‘īfa (1624).
(3) The words “from the Fire” are omitted in manuscript kāf.
(4) No. 9848. Its chain includes al-Husayn ibn Bishr, whom the author will discuss later. It was also transmitted by Abū Bakr al-Rūyānī in his Musnad (2:311), through a chain containing ‘Alī ibn Sadaqa, of whom al-Hāfiz said in al-Lisān (5:550): “He transmits unusual reports.” Ibn al-Sunnī also transmitted it in ‘Amal al-Yawm wa-l-Layla (124), through a chain containing Ahmad ibn Hārūn, who transmits objectionable reports, and two other narrators with some weakness. Al-Tabarānī likewise transmitted it in al-Kabīr (8:114), al-Du‘ā’ (675), and Musnad al-Shāmiyyīn (824), through several chains. Some contain al-Husayn ibn Bishr; another contains Muhammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn al-‘Alā’ ibn Zibrīq, who used to steal hadiths—see Tārīkh al-Islām (5:1210) and Lisān al-Mīzān (6:472). Yet another contains Hārūn ibn Dāwūd al-Najjār al-Tarsūsī, for whom I have found no biographical entry. See also Natā’ij al-Afkār (2:294–295) and Tanzīh al-Sharī‘a by Ibn ‘Arrāq (1:288). It appears—and Allah knows best—that the hadith is not established, since every chain contains someone who transmits unusual reports, someone who transmits objectionable reports, or a hadith thief.
