Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

he prostrated, then said “Allah is greatest” as he rose. He then gave the closing salutation (1).

Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī (2) reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, led them in prayer, performed two prostrations, then recited the testimony of faith and gave the closing salutation. Al-Tirmidhī said: “Good and singular.”

(1) Al-Fiqī added after this: “He then performed two prostrations.” The al-Risāla edition deleted “He then gave the closing salutation,” together with al-Fiqī’s addition. Neither the addition nor the deletion was correct. The hadith was recorded by al-Bukhārī (1227) and Muslim (573), from Abū Hurayra. The wording cited is Muslim’s (573/97). (2) No. 395. It was also recorded by Abū Dāwūd (1039), Abū ‘Awāna (1926), al-Hākim (1/323), and al-Bayhaqī (2/355), through Ash‘ath ibn ‘Abd al-Malik al-Humrānī, from Muhammad ibn Sīrīn, from Khālid al-Hadhdhā’, from Abū Qilāba, from Abū al-Muhallab, from ‘Imrān ibn Husayn, with the same report. Al-Bayhaqī said: “Ash‘ath al-Humrānī alone transmitted this. Shu‘ba, Wuhayb, Ibn ‘Ulayya, al-Thaqafī, Hushaym, Hammād ibn Zayd, Yazīd ibn Zuray‘, and others transmitted it from Khālid al-Hadhdhā’; none mentioned what Ash‘ath transmitted through Muhammad from Khālid. Ayyūb transmitted it from Muhammad, who said: ‘I was informed of a report from ‘Imrān,’ mentioning the closing salutation but not the tashahhud (recitation of the testimony of faith). Hushaym’s narration mentions the tashahhud before the two prostrations. This indicates that Ash‘ath’s narration is mistaken.” Al-Hāfiz supported this in al-Fath (3/98), saying: “… Al-Bayhaqī, Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr [al-Tamhīd (1/361)], and others judged it weak. They deemed Ash‘ath’s narration erroneous because it differed from those of the other hadith masters who transmitted from Ibn Sīrīn: the reliably preserved version of ‘Imrān’s hadith transmitted from Ibn Sīrīn contains no mention of the tashahhud. Al-Sarrāj also transmitted, through Salama ibn ‘Alqama, concerning this incident: ‘I asked Ibn Sīrīn: “What about the tashahhud?” He replied: “I have heard nothing concerning the tashahhud.”’ Earlier, in the chapter on interlacing the fingers, a report was cited through Ibn ‘Awn, from Ibn Sīrīn, who said: ‘I was informed that ‘Imrān ibn Husayn said: “He then gave the closing salutation.”’ Likewise, the reliably preserved version of ‘Imrān’s hadith transmitted from Khālid al-Hadhdhā’ through this chain, as recorded by Muslim, contains no mention of the tashahhud. Thus, Ash‘ath’s addition is anomalous (shādhdh). For this reason, Ibn al-Mundhir said: ‘I do not think that the tashahhud in the prostrations for forgetfulness is established …’” Accordingly, al-Albānī classified it as anomalous. See al-Irwā’ (403) and Da‘īf Abī Dāwūd—al-Umm (1/393–396).
