When he ﷺ stood in prayer, he would lower his head. Imam Ahmad mentioned this (2).
During the testimony of faith, his gaze would not extend beyond his pointing finger, as noted earlier.
Allah, Most High, had made prayer the delight of his eyes and the source of his bliss, joy, and rest. He would therefore (3) say: “O Bilāl, bring us comfort through prayer” (4). He would also say: “Prayer has been made the delight of my eyes” (5).
Yet none of this distracted him from attending to the circumstances of

(2) In al-Nāsikh wa-l-Mansūkh, from Ibn Sīrīn, as noted in a marginal annotation in J and in al-Mubdi‘ (1:379). Al-Hākim (2:393) and al-Bayhaqī (2:283) also reported it through Muhammad ibn Sīrīn from Abū Hurayrah. Al-Bayhaqī stated that the correct version is mursal from Ibn Sīrīn. See Irwā’ al-Ghalīl (2:71–73).
(3) Q and N read: wa-kāna (“and he would”).
(4) Reported by Ahmad (23088), Abū Dāwūd (4985), and al-Tabarānī (6214), all through ‘Amr ibn Murra, from Sālim ibn Abī al-Ja‘d, from a man of Khuzā‘a, from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). The versions transmitted from Sālim ibn Abī al-Ja‘d differ, and consequently so does the identification of the Companion. Al-Dāraqutnī discussed these differences in detail in al-‘Ilal (461) and stated that the chain mentioned above is the soundest. Despite his reliability, Sālim ibn Abī al-Ja‘d frequently transmitted mursal reports. Nevertheless, al-Zayla‘ī graded this report authentic in Takhrīj al-Kashshāf (1:62), as did al-‘Irāqī in Takhrīj al-Ihyā’ (1:118; Dār Tabariyya). See also the editors’ annotation to al-Musnad (23154).
(5) Reported by Ahmad (12294). The correct assessment is that it is mursal. It has been cited earlier (p. 151).
