The point is that he would sometimes do something during prayer in response to a particular circumstance, although it was not his regular practice. An example of this was when he ﷺ sent (1) a horseman ahead as a scout, then stood to pray and began (2) looking towards the mountain pass from which the scout would return (3). Looking around during prayer was not his customary practice. In Sahīh al-Bukhārī (4), ʿĀ’ishah said: “I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about looking around during prayer. He replied: ‘It is a theft by which Satan steals from the servant’s prayer.’”
Al-Tirmidhī (5) also records a hadith narrated by Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab from Anas, who related the words of
(1) Sād reads wa-li-hādhā lammā ba‘atha al-nabī (“And for this reason, when the Prophet sent”).
(2) This is the wording in all the manuscripts; the clause introduced by lammā (“when”) has no main clause completing it.
(3) Recorded by Abū Dāwūd (916, 2501) and al-Nasā’ī in al-Kubrā (8819), and graded authentic by al-Albānī in al-Sahīha (378).
(4) Nos. 751 and 3291.
(5) No. 589; he graded it hasan gharīb. Al-Tabarānī also recorded a longer version in al-Awsat (5991) and al-Saghīr (856), through al-Tirmidhī’s teacher. As for its chain of transmission, the author has spared us the trouble of examining it. Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr stated in al-Tamhīd (17/391) that it belongs to the ahādīth al-shuyūkh (reports of the shaykhs), which cannot serve as evidence. Al-Tirmidhī’s assessment appears as “a hasan sahīh hadith” in al-Mizzī’s Tuhfat al-Ashrāf (1/226) and Ibn ‘Abd al-Hādī’s al-Muharrar (292). Al-Hāfiz likewise quoted it in Bulūgh al-Marām (242), and al-Mundhirī indicated in al-Targhīb wa-l-Tarhīb (760, al-Ma‘ārif edition) that some copies contain this reading. However, al-Nukat al-Zirāf (1/227, published with al-Tuhfa), discussing this particular chain, states that in the authoritative copies, al-Tirmidhī graded this chain hasan gharīb in the chapters on seeking permission to enter; in al-Karkhī’s handwriting, the assessment appears as hasan sahīh gharīb, and al-Nawawī relied on it in al-Adhkār. It then states: “Grading such a report authentic is an error made by transmitters after al-Tirmidhī, for it could not come from anyone with even the slightest knowledge of hadith.”
