And al-Nasā’ī (1) reported that Ibn ‘Umar said: “It is part of the sunnah of prayer to keep the right foot (2) upright, point its toes towards the qiblah, and sit on the left foot.” No other manner of sitting at this point has been recorded from him, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
He would place his hands on his thighs, resting the point of his elbow (3) on his thigh and the end of his hand on his knee. He would fold two of his fingers and form a circle, then raise his finger in supplication and move it. This is what Wā’il ibn Hujr reported about him (4).
(1) In al-Mujtabā (1158) and al-Kubrā (748), with a hasan (good) chain of transmission. Also recorded by al-Bukhārī (827) and others without the addition: “and pointing its toes towards the qiblah.” Al-Bukhārī recorded this addition in the hadith of Abū Humayd al-Sā‘idī (828).
(2) K reads: “qadamahu (his foot).”
(3) Q and K read: “mirfaqayhi (his elbows).”
(4) Recorded by Ahmad (18870), al-Dārimī (1357), al-Bukhārī in Raf‘ al-Yadayn (31), Abū Dāwūd (727)—in an abridged version omitting the relevant passage—al-Nasā’ī in al-Mujtabā (889, 1268) and al-Kubrā (965, 1191), Ibn Khuzaymah (480, 714), Ibn Hibbān (1860), al-Tabarānī (22/35), and al-Bayhaqī (2/132). All transmit it through various chains from Zā’idah ibn Qudāmah, from ‘Āsim ibn Kulayb, from his father, from Wā’il ibn Hujr. Ibn Khuzaymah said: “None of the reports contains ‘he moves it’ except this report; Zā’idah mentioned it.” I say: Eighteen narrators differed from him, all reliable and firmly established, of equal or greater reliability, and none mentioned this addition. Foremost among them are al-Thawrī [Ahmad (18858)], Ibn ‘Uyaynah [al-Nasā’ī in al-Kubrā (1187) and Ibn Khuzaymah (691)], Shu‘bah [Ahmad (18855) and Ibn Khuzaymah (697)], and Zuhayr ibn Mu‘āwiyah [Ahmad (18876)]. Thus, Zā’idah’s transmission is shādhdhah (anomalous) and is not to be relied upon. See al-Jāmi‘ fī al-‘Ilal wa-al-Fawā’id by Māhir al-Fahl (3/240–251).
