Maktūm” (1), but a narrator instead said: “Indeed (2), Ibn Umm Maktūm gives the call to prayer at night, so eat and drink until Bilāl gives the call to prayer” (3). Likewise, some narrators reversed the wording of Abū Hurayrah’s hadith: “The Fire will continue to be fed, and it will say, ‘Is there any more?’” Later in the hadith, he said: “As for Paradise, Allah will create beings for it and settle them there,” but a narrator instead said: “As for the Fire, Allah will create beings for it and settle them there” (4).

Eventually, I found that Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah had narrated it in that very form. Ibn Abī Shaybah said (5): Muhammad ibn narrated to us from

(1) Reported by al-Bukhārī (622 and elsewhere) and Muslim (1092), from ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Umar. (2) “Inna” (indeed) is omitted from the printed edition. In ك, “bi-anna” (that) replaces “fa-qāla inna” (and he said, “Indeed…”). (3) Reported by Abū Ya‘lā (4385), Ibn Khuzayma (406), and Ibn Hibbān (3473), through ‘Abd al-‘Azīz ibn Muhammad al-Darāwardī, from Hishām, from ‘Urwa, from ‘Ā’isha. Its chain of transmission is sound. The author discussed the inversion of wording in this hadith in Ahkām Ahl al-Dhimma (2:1106), and will discuss it again in this book. See also I‘lām al-Muwaqqi‘īn (3:317–318). Al-Hāfiz attempted to reconcile the two versions and refute the claim of inversion, although he had initially inclined toward that explanation. See Fath al-Bārī (2:102–103). (4) The correct version is reported from Abū Hurayra by al-Bukhārī (4850) and Muslim (2846), and from Anas by al-Bukhārī (7384) and Muslim (2848/39). The version with inverted wording is reported by al-Bukhārī (7449), from Abū Hurayra. Al-Hāfiz states in al-Fath (13:436–437): “Abū al-Hasan al-Qābisī said: ‘The established wording here is that Allah creates beings for Paradise, whereas He places His foot in the Fire.’ He added: ‘I know of no hadith other than this one stating that He creates beings for the Fire.’” End of quotation. The author attributes the view that this hadith contains an inversion to Shaykh al-Islām in Ahkām Ahl al-Dhimma (2:1104–1106) and in this book, before the beginning of “Section on His Guidance—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—Concerning the Two Eids.” He also discusses the inversion in Hādī al-Arwāh (2:754, 801). (5) No. 2717; also reported through him by Abū Ya‘lā (6540). It is also reported by al-Tahāwī in Sharh al-Ma‘ānī (1:255) and Sharh al-Mushkil (182), and by al-Bayhaqī (2:100), who said: “However, ‘Abd Allāh ibn Sa‘īd al-Maqburī is weak. The opposing report is narrated solely by Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh ibn al-Hasan, and from him by al-Darāwardī. He then cited the forthcoming hadith of Abū Hurayra with the wording: ‘One of you proceeds…’” See the following documentation of the hadith’s sources.
