Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

and at other times he would say: “O Allah, to You I bow, in You I believe, and to You I submit. My hearing, my sight, my marrow, my bones, and my sinews are humbled before You” (1). This has been reported from him only in the night prayer.

Then he would raise his head, saying: “Allah hears whoever praises Him” (2), and raise his hands as mentioned earlier. About thirty Companions reported that he raised his hands at these three points (3), and all ten concurred in reporting it. No contrary practice is established from him whatsoever; rather, this remained his practice until he departed this world. The report of al-Barā’ (4), “Then he did not do so again,” is not authentically established from the Prophet; rather, these words are an addition by Yazīd (5). Nor is Ibn Mas‘ūd’s omission of raising his hands (6) something to be given precedence

(1) Reported by Muslim (771), from ‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib. (2) It is recorded in the Sahīhs of al-Bukhārī and Muslim, from Abū Hurayra, ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Umar, and ‘Ā’isha, may Allah be pleased with them. (3) The author has an important work on this issue, Raf‘ al-yadayn fī al-salāh (Raising the Hands in Prayer). At its beginning (pp. 7–8), he listed more than thirty Companions and presented all their reports with their chains of transmission. Al-Bukhārī had preceded him in this: he listed seventeen Companions after relating a report from ‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib at the beginning of his extensive work, Juz’ raf‘ al-yadayn (Treatise on Raising the Hands). (4) Reported by al-Bukhārī in Raf‘ al-yadayn (p. 84), Abū Dāwūd (749), Abū Ya‘lā (1690), and al-Dāraqutnī (1129). Abū Dāwūd stated after (752): “This hadith is not authentic.” See also the author’s Raf‘ al-yadayn (pp. 43–50). (5) Al-Fiqī added “ibn Ziyād” after “Yazīd,” contrary to the earlier editions; the al-Risāla edition followed him. The correct name is Yazīd ibn Abī Ziyād. (6) Reported by Ahmad (3681), Abū Dāwūd (748, 751), al-Tirmidhī (257), al-Nasā’ī in al-Mujtabā (1058) and al-Kubrā (749, 110), al-Bayhaqī (2:78), and others. Abū Dāwūd stated after (748): “It is not authentic in this wording.” See also the author’s Raf‘ al-yadayn (pp. 50–56). After (256), al-Tirmidhī quoted Ibn al-Mubārak as saying: “Ibn Mas‘ūd’s report that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, raised his hands only on the first occasion has not been established as authentic.”
