the dawn prayer or until daybreak? Both have been reported (1).
Moreover, since it has fewer (2) units of prayer, prolonging it compensates for the smaller number.
Moreover, it follows sleep, when people are rested.
Moreover, they have not yet begun the tasks (3) of earning a living and attending to worldly affairs.
Moreover, it takes place at a time when the hearing and tongue are in harmony with the heart, because the heart is unoccupied and worldly concerns have not taken hold of it (4). Thus, the heart understands the Quran and reflects upon it.
(1) As for “until daybreak,” al-Bukhārī (1145) and Muslim (758) report it through several chains from Abū Hurayra. Daybreak is explicitly mentioned only in Muslim (758/169, 170), with the wordings “dawn grows light” and “morning breaks.”
As for “until the dawn prayer,” some chains of this same hadith from Abū Hurayra include an additional phrase expressing uncertainty on the part of one narrator: “or until the reciter finishes the dawn prayer.” It is reported by Ahmad (10544), Hannād ibn al-Sarī in al-Zuhd (Asceticism) (884), al-Dārimī (1519), al-Bazzār (14/319), Ibn Khuzayma in al-Tawhīd (Divine Oneness) (1/267, 268), and al-Dāraqutnī in al-Nuzūl (The Descent) (18, 19; Nash’at ibn Kamāl edition). All transmit it through chains from Muhammad ibn ‘Amr, from Abū Salama, from Abū Hurayra. Muhammad ibn ‘Amr is Ibn ‘Alqama, a truthful narrator who makes errors. This may be one of his errors, since no other narrator corroborated him in this wording.
(2) This is the reading in all the manuscript witnesses, the Indian edition, and other editions. The verb is feminine because of rak‘āt (units of prayer): its agreement follows the genitive dependent rather than the governing noun.
(3) ص reads: “ishtighāl (occupation).” The printed editions read “istiqbāl (facing),” a textual corruption.
(4) ص reads: “al-ishtighāl (occupation).” ق, مب, and ن read: “fīhi (in it),” a textual corruption.
