Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

and at other times the two surahs (1), Sabbih (Glorify) and al-Ghāshiyah (The Overwhelming) (2).

This was the practice he maintained until he met Allah; nothing abrogated it. His rightly guided caliphs therefore followed it after him. Abū Bakr al-Siddīq (may Allah be pleased with him) recited Surah (3) al-Baqarah (The Cow) in the Fajr prayer, concluding the prayer with the salām shortly before sunrise. They said, “Successor to the Messenger of Allah, the sun almost rose!” He replied, “Had it risen, it would not have found us heedless!” (4). ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to recite in that prayer Yūsuf (Joseph) (5), al-Nahl (The Bees) (6), Hūd (7), and Banī

(1) ك, مب read: “bi-sūrah (with a surah).” (2) This is included in the previously cited hadith of al-Nu‘mān ibn Bashīr. (3) ق, م, مب, ن read: “bi-sūrah (with a surah).” (4) Reported from Anas through two sound chains by al-Shāfi‘ī in Ikhtilāf Mālik (al-Umm, 8/629)—and through him by al-Bayhaqī (2/389)—as well as by ‘Abd al-Razzāq (2711, 2712), Ibn Abī Shaybah (3565), Harb al-Kirmānī in his Masā’il (p. 137, Āl Faryān edition), and Ibn al-Mundhir in al-Awsat (3/71). The person who spoke to Abū Bakr was ‘Umar. (5) Reported by Mālik (219), and through him by al-Shāfi‘ī in Ikhtilāf Mālik (al-Umm, 8/566), from Hishām ibn ‘Urwah, from his father, from ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Āmir ibn Rabī‘ah: ‘Umar recited Yūsuf (Joseph) and al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) slowly during the Fajr prayer. Muslim criticized Mālik’s chain of transmission; see al-Tamyīz (pp. 199–201) and the commentary thereon. Ibn Abī Shaybah (3568) and Ahmad, in al-‘Ilal as transmitted by his son ‘Abd Allāh (3736), also reported it through Hishām from ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Āmir; this version mentions only Surah Yūsuf. In any case, the report is sound. (6) Ibn Abī Shaybah (4425) reported that ‘Umar recited al-Nahl (The Bees) and Banī Isrā’īl (The Children of Israel) during the Fajr prayer and performed a prostration during each. Its chain is interrupted, since Bakr ibn ‘Abd Allāh did not live to meet ‘Umar. (7) ‘Abd al-Razzāq (2710) reported that ‘Umar recited al-Kahf (The Cave) and Yūsuf, or Yūsuf and Hūd—the narrator was uncertain. Ibn Abī Shaybah (3566) and Harb al-Kirmānī, in his Masā’il (p. 138, Āl Faryān edition), reported that he recited Yūnus (Jonah), Hūd, and similar surahs; its chain has some weakness. Ibn Abī Shaybah (3572) reported something similar through the same chain from Abū Hurayrah, describing his own practice.
