al-Dukhān (The Smoke)’ (1), that he recited in it ‘Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High’ (2), that he recited in it ‘By the fig and the olive’ (3), that he recited in it the two surahs of refuge (4), that he recited in it ‘Those Sent Forth,’ and that he used to recite in it the short surahs of al-Mufassal (5). He said: These are all reports
(1) Reported by al-Nasā’ī in al-Mujtabā (988) and al-Kubrā (1062), from ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Utbah ibn Mas‘ūd, as a mursal report. Ibn Abī Shaybah (3616) also reported that Ibn ‘Abbās recited al-Dukhān in Maghrib.
(2) Reported by al-Tabarānī in al-Kabīr, as cited in Majma‘ al-Zawā’id (2:188), from ‘Abd Allāh ibn al-Hārith ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib. Al-Hāfiz likewise attributed it to him in Natā’ij al-Afkār (1:461). Both judged the report defective because of the weakness of Hajjāj ibn Nasīr. Al-Hāfiz then mentioned that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was reported to have instructed that this surah be recited in Maghrib. I say: This appears in al-Nasā’ī’s al-Mujtabā (984) and al-Kubrā (1508), in the hadith of Jābir concerning the Prophet’s rebuke of Mu‘ādh ibn Jabal for prolonging the prayer when leading the people. The correct account, however, places the incident in ‘Ishā’, not Maghrib, as will be seen. It is recorded in the two Sahīhs.
(3) Reported by al-Tayālisī (769), al-Humaydī (743), Ibn Abī Shaybah (3628), and Ahmad (18528), from al-Barā’. The well-known version places this in the ‘Ishā’ prayer. Shaykh al-Albānī attempted to reconcile the two versions in terms of both transmission and interpretation; see Asl Sifat al-Salāh (2:475–476).
(4) Reported by al-‘Uqaylī in al-Du‘afā’, in the entry on ‘Abd Allāh ibn Kurz (3:307), and by Ibn al-Muqri’ in his Mu‘jam (544), through Ibn Kurz, from Nāfi‘, from ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Umar, as a marfū‘ report (attributed to the Prophet). Al-‘Uqaylī said: “No other transmitter corroborates him in this report.”
(5) Reported by Ahmad (7991) and al-Nasā’ī in al-Mujtabā (982, 983) and al-Kubrā (1056, 1057), from Abū Hurayrah. Ibn Khuzaymah (520) and Ibn Hibbān (1837) graded it authentic. It is corroborated by Mālik’s report (209)—also transmitted through him by ‘Abd al-Razzāq (2698) and al-Bayhaqī (2:391)—that Abū Bakr recited one of the short surahs of al-Mufassal in the Maghrib prayer.
