Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

As for the Maghrib prayer, his practice differed from what people do today. On one occasion, he recited Surah “The Heights,” dividing it (1) between the two units of prayer (2); on another, “The Mount” (3); and on another, “Those Sent Forth” (4). Abū ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-Barr said (5): “It is reported (6) that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, recited ‘Alif Lām Mīm Sād’ in the Maghrib prayer, that he recited ‘Those Ranged in Ranks’ in it (7), and that he recited in it ‘Hā Mīm

(1) Farraqahā (“he divided it”) is omitted from ص. (2) Reported by al-Bukhārī (764), from Zayd ibn Thābit, with the wording “the longer of the two long surahs” (bi-tūlā al-tūlayayn), without explaining it. Al-Nasā’ī’s version in al-Mujtabā (989) and al-Kubrā (1063) reads: “the longer of the two long surahs (Alif Lām Mīm Sād)” (bi-atwal al-tūlayayn); Abū Dāwūd’s version (812) reads: “al-A‘rāf (The Heights).” There is disagreement over who supplied this explanation. The correct view is that it was ‘Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, as indicated by the versions in al-Nasā’ī’s al-Mujtabā (990) and al-Kubrā (1064), and al-Bayhaqī (2:392). (3) Reported by al-Bukhārī (765) and Muslim (463), from Jubayr ibn Mut‘im. (4) Reported by al-Bukhārī (763) and Muslim (462), from Ibn ‘Abbās, from his mother, Umm al-Fadl bint al-Hārith. (5) In al-Tamhīd (9:145–146). (6) ك reads: yurwā (“it is reported”). Al-Tamhīd agrees with the reading adopted here from the other copies. (7) Before Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr, Ibn Battāl mentioned this in Sharh Sahīh al-Bukhārī (2:186) among the evidence cited by those who hold that the Maghrib prayer has two time periods. Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr likewise mentioned it in al-Tamhīd (8:82) and al-Istidhkār (1:29). In al-Tamhīd (19:8), he transmitted from Ibn ‘Umar: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to instruct us to keep the prayer brief, yet he would lead us in prayer reciting al-Sāffāt (Those Ranged in Ranks).” He then said: “Some transmitters added to this hadith: ‘in the morning prayer’; it has also been said: ‘in Maghrib.’” The hadith was reported by al-Shāfi‘ī, as cited in Ma‘rifat al-Sunan (5889), Ahmad (4796, 6471), and al-Nasā’ī in al-Mujtabā (826) and al-Kubrā (902, 11368), from ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Umar. Ibn Khuzaymah (1606) and Ibn Hibbān (1817) graded it authentic. Ahmad’s version (4989) reads “in the morning prayer,” and Ibn Hibbān’s (1817) reads “in the dawn prayer”; both are transmitted through Yazīd ibn Hārūn al-Wāsitī. Al-Tayālisī’s version (1925) likewise reads “in the morning prayer.” I have not come across the claim that it was in Maghrib.
