His Practice in Ablution
He (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) would usually perform ablution for each prayer, though he sometimes offered several prayers with a single ablution. Sometimes he used a mudd (a measure of volume), sometimes two-thirds of it, and sometimes more. This amounted to roughly four ūqiyyahs (weight units) by the Damascene measure, down to two or three (1).
He was among the most sparing in pouring water for ablution. He warned his community against using it wastefully and foretold that some members of his community would exceed the bounds in purification (2). He said: “Ablution has a devil called al-Walahān, so beware of obsessive doubts concerning water” (3).
(1) Thus in the manuscripts, rather than thalāth (“three”).
(2) “And he foretold … purification” is omitted from ك. The hadith is recorded by Ahmad (16796), Abū Dāwūd (96), al-Hākim (1/162), and al-Bayhaqī (1/196), through Abū Na‘āma from ‘Abd Allāh ibn Mughaffal. Its chain is disconnected between Abū Na‘āma and ‘Abd Allāh ibn Mughaffal, as al-Dhahabī indicated in Talkhīs al-Mustadrak. Al-Rūyānī’s version (897) places Yazīd ibn ‘Abd Allāh ibn Mughaffal between them; he is an unknown narrator. Ibn Hibbān’s version (6763) reads: “From al-Jurayrī, from Abū al-‘Alā’, who said: ‘Abd Allāh ibn Mughaffal heard a son of his …” I fear that “Abū al-‘Alā’” may be a scribal misreading of “Abū Na‘āma,” since no one has listed Abū al-‘Alā’ among those who narrated from ‘Abd Allāh ibn Mughaffal. There is a corroborating report from Sa‘d ibn Abī Waqqās, recorded by Ibn Abī Shayba (30023) and Ahmad (1483), through Abū Na‘āma, from a freedman of Sa‘d, from Sa‘d. This freedman of Sa‘d is likewise unknown. That report mentions exceeding the bounds in supplication, but not in purification. See Sahīh Abī Dāwūd—al-Umm (1/163).
(3) Recorded by Ahmad (21238), al-Tirmidhī (57), and Ibn Māja (421), from Ubayy ibn Ka‘b. Its chain includes Khārija ibn Mus‘ab, whose weakness is unanimously acknowledged. Al-Tirmidhī judged the hadith weak, saying: “The hadith of Ubayy ibn Ka‘b is a gharīb hadith, and its chain is not considered strong and sound by hadith scholars, for we know of no one other than Khārija who transmitted it with a chain reaching the Prophet. This hadith has been transmitted through several routes as a statement of al-Hasan himself. Nothing attributed to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) on this subject is authentic. Khārija is not considered strong by our scholars, and Ibn al-Mubārak declared him weak.” Abū Hātim judged its attribution to the Prophet erroneous, and Abū Zur‘a described it as munkar (rejected). See al-‘Ilal by Ibn Abī Hātim (130, 158), and Ta‘līqa ‘alā al-‘Ilal li-Ibn Abī Hātim by Ibn ‘Abd al-Hādī (pp. 145–149).
