Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

Allah wills comes to pass, even if people dislike it. No one can make distant what Allah has brought near, nor bring near what Allah has made distant (1). Nothing happens except by Allah’s permission.”

His sermons centred on praising Allah and extolling Him for His blessings, His attributes of perfection, and His praiseworthy qualities; teaching the fundamentals of Islam; speaking of Paradise, Hell, and the Hereafter; enjoining fear of Allah; and explaining what incurs His wrath and what earns His pleasure = these were the central themes of his sermons.

He would also say in his sermons: “O people, you will not be able to fulfil—or: you will not fulfil—all that (2) you have been commanded to do. But strive to do what is right, and take heart” (3).

On every occasion, he would preach according to the needs and best interests of those he addressed.

He never delivered a sermon without beginning it by praising Allah and pronouncing both parts of the testimony of faith, mentioning himself by his proper name. It is established that he said: “Every sermon that contains no testimony of faith is like a mutilated hand” (4).

(1) Sād reads: ab‘ada (“made distant”). The words “no one can bring near” are omitted from Mīm-Bā’. (2) Kāf and ‘Ayn read: “you will not be able to do as”; someone corrected this reading in ‘Ayn. The word “all” is omitted from Sād. (3) Reported by Ahmad (17856), Abū Ya‘lā (6826), Ibn Khuzayma (1452), in an abridged version, al-Tabarānī (3165), and al-Bayhaqī in al-Sunan al-kubrā (3:206), whose wording is quoted here, from al-Hakam ibn Hazn al-Kulafī, may Allah be pleased with him. Its chain of transmission is hasan (good). It includes Shihāb ibn Khirāsh and Shu‘ayb ibn Zurayq, both truthful narrators, though each has some weakness. See the commentary on al-Musnad. (4) Reported by Ishāq ibn Rāhawayh in his Musnad (265), Ahmad (8018), al-Bukhārī in al-Tārīkh al-kabīr (7:229), Abū Dāwūd (4841), and al-Tirmidhī (1106), from Abū Hurayra. It was graded authentic by Ibn Hibbān (2796) and al-Albānī in al-Sahīha (169).
