He had a kohl container from which he applied kohl three times to each eye every night (1).
The Companions differed over whether he dyed his hair (2). Anas said that he did not (3), while Abū Hurayrah said that he did (4).
Hammād ibn Salamah narrated from Humayd, from Anas, who said: “I saw the hair of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, dyed.” Hammād said: And Abd Allāh ibn Muhammad ibn Aqīl informed me, saying:
(1) Transmitted by Ahmad (3318, 3320), al-Tirmidhī in al-Jāmiʿ (1757) and al-Shamā’il (49), Ibn Mājah (3499), and others, through ʿAbbād ibn Mansūr, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās. Al-Bukhārī said in al-Tirmidhī’s al-ʿIlal al-Kabīr (pp. 309–310): “This is a well-preserved (mahfūz) hadith, and ʿAbbād ibn Mansūr is truthful (sadūq).” However, Yahyā ibn Saʿīd did not approve of ʿAbbād as a narrator, and Ahmad, Abū Hātim, Abū Dāwūd, and al-Nasā’ī criticized him. Moreover, he was a mudallis (a narrator who conceals intermediaries), and here he used ʿan (“from”), without explicitly stating that he heard the report directly. Abū Hātim said in his son’s al-ʿIlal (2463): “ʿAbbād is not strong in hadith transmission. He narrates from Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Yahyā, from Dāwūd ibn Husayn, from ʿIkrimah. I therefore fear that the person he left unnamed is Ibrāhīm, the report being transmitted from him through tadlīs (concealment of an intermediary).” Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Yahyā is Ibrāhīm ibn Muhammad ibn Abī Yahyā, al-Shāfiʿī’s teacher, an abandoned narrator (matrūk). Al-Albānī graded the hadith weak in al-Irwā’ (76). Allah knows best what is correct. See also Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb, the entry on ʿAbbād ibn Mansūr (5:105).
(2) See also the discussion below in volume four.
(3) Transmitted by Muslim (2341/100–105).
(4) Transmitted by al-Tirmidhī in al-Shamā’il (46). Its chain includes Sharīk al-Qādī, who has some weakness as a narrator. Al-Tirmidhī identified a defect in his report because another narrator transmitted it differently: Abū ʿAwānah Waddāh al-Yashkurī narrated it as a report from Umm Salamah.
