Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

He would leave the privy and then recite the Quran. He used his left hand both to wash himself and to cleanse himself with stones. He did none of the things practised by those afflicted with obsessive doubts: tugging sharply at the penis, clearing the throat, jumping, holding a rope, climbing steps, stuffing cotton into the opening (1) of the urethra, pouring water into it, checking it repeatedly, and other such innovations practised by those afflicted with obsessive doubts (2).

It has been narrated that when he—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—urinated, he would tug sharply at his penis three times (3). It has also been narrated (4) that he instructed others to do so (5)

(1) The Indian edition and others read “nakhs.” Since this makes no sense here, the al-Risāla edition omitted it altogether, without comment! It is a corruption of bukhsh (“hole”), the reading established from the manuscripts. Al-Damīrī explains its meaning in Hayāt al-Hayawān al-Kubrā (1:650). Its plural is abkhāsh. The author used it in Miftāh Dār al-Sa‘āda (2:742, 764) for the holes in a flute and a strainer. Dozy (1:249) records both bakhsh and bukhsh, whereas the author of Muhīt al-Muhīt (p. 29) gives only bukhsh, which is closer to the original form. It is a Syriac word that became widespread in the colloquial speech of the Levant and Iraq. See al-Karmalī’s journal Lughat al-‘Arab (5:248), al-Mawsilī’s al-Āthār al-Ārāmiyya fī Lughat al-Mawsil al-‘Āmmiyya (p. 17), and Aghnātiyūs Ya‘qūb’s al-Barāhīn al-Hissiyya (p. 65). (2) See also Ighāthat al-Lahfān (1:253–254), where the author lists ten things that those afflicted with obsessive doubts do after urinating! (3) Transmitted by al-Bayhaqī (1:113) through ‘Īsā ibn Yazdād—or Azdād—from his father; both are unknown narrators. See the following documentation of the hadith’s sources. (4) ك، ع: “It was narrated from him.” (5) Transmitted by Ibn Abī Shayba (1720, 1722), Ahmad (19053), Abū Dāwūd in al-Marāsīl (p. 73), and Ibn Māja (326), through Zam‘a ibn Sālih, from ‘Īsā ibn Yazdād al-Yamānī, from his father. Zam‘a is weak, while ‘Īsā and his father are unknown narrators [Ibn Abī Hātim, al-‘Ilal (89)]. Ibn ‘Adī states in al-Kāmil, in the entry on ‘Īsā ibn Yazdād (8:248): “He is known only through this hadith.” Al-Bukhārī states in al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr (6:392): “‘Īsā ibn Yazdād’s narration from his father is mursal (disconnected). Zam‘a narrated from him. It is not authentic.” See al-Talkhīs al-Habīr (1:286–288) and the annotations to al-Musnad.
