standing up, and he said, ‘O ʿUmar, do not urinate standing up.’” He said: “I never urinated standing up after that.” Al-Tirmidhī said: “Only ʿAbd al-Karīm ibn Abī al-Mukhāriq traced this report back to the Prophet (1), and hadith scholars regard him as weak.”

In the Musnad of al-Bazzār (2) and elsewhere, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Buraydah narrated from his father that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “Three things are signs of coarseness: a man urinating standing up, wiping his forehead before finishing his prayer, or blowing while prostrating.” Al-Tirmidhī also narrated it (3) and said: “It is not reliably preserved.” Al-Bazzār said (4): “We know of no one who narrated it from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Buraydah except Saʿīd ibn ʿUbayd Allāh,” and he did not impugn his reliability in any way. Ibn Abī Hātim said (5): “He is a well-known, trustworthy narrator from Basra.”

(1) The mawqūf version (attributed to a Companion rather than the Prophet) was transmitted by Ibn Abī Shayba (1333) with an authentic chain from ‘Umar: “I have not urinated standing up since embracing Islam.” (2) (10:305). Also transmitted by al-Bukhārī in al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr (2:495–496) and al-Tabarānī in al-Awsat (5998). Al-Bukhārī’s wording is: “Four things are signs of coarseness … and hearing the caller to prayer without pronouncing the testimony of faith as he does.” The transmissions from ‘Abd Allāh ibn Burayda differ. Kahmas ibn al-Hasan narrated from him that he said: “It used to be said: Four things are signs of coarseness …”; transmitted by Ibn Abī Shayba (4747). Qatāda narrated from Ibn Burayda, from Ibn Mas‘ūd, who said: “Four things are signs of coarseness …”; transmitted by al-Bayhaqī (2:285). Ibn Rajab favored the mawqūf attribution in Fath al-Bārī (3:345). For details, see Anīs al-Sārī (10:516–517). (3) Following hadith no. 12. Al-Bayhaqī (2:285) quoted al-Bukhārī as saying: “This is a munkar (rejected) hadith; they transmit it inconsistently.” (4) In al-Bahr al-Zakhkhār (10:305). (5) See al-Jarh wa-l-Ta‘dīl (4:38–39).
