“I seek Your forgiveness.” (1)
He would sometimes cleanse himself with water, sometimes with stones, and sometimes with both. When travelling, he would go to relieve himself far enough to be out of his Companions’ sight, sometimes going about two miles away. He would screen himself while relieving himself, sometimes behind raised ground (2), sometimes behind a dense cluster of date palms (3), and sometimes behind trees in the wilderness (4).
When he wished to urinate on hard ground, he would pick up a stick from the ground and poke the soil with it until it softened, then urinate. He would seek out soft, loose ground on which to urinate.

Abū Hātim considered it the most authentic report on this subject, as recorded in his son’s al-‘Ilal (93). وكان يستنجي بالماء تارةً، ويستجمر بالأحجار تارةً، ويجمع بينهما تارةً. وكان إذا ذهب في سفره للحاجة انطلق حتى يتوارى عن أصحابه، وربما كان يبعد نحو الميلين. وكان يستتر للحاجة بالهدف (٢) تارةً، وبحائش النخل (٣) تارةً، وبشجر البوادي (٤) تارةً.
وكان إذا أراد أن يبول في عَزَازٍ من الأرض ــ وهو الموضع الصُّلب ــ أخذ عودًا من الأرض، فنكَت به حتى يَثْرَى، ثم يبول. وكان يرتاد لبوله الموضع الدَّمِث وهو الليِّن الرِّخْو من الأرض.
