Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

When ‘Adī ibn Hātim came to him, he invited him to his home. The servant girl brought him a cushion to sit on, but he placed it between himself and ‘Adī and sat on the ground. ‘Adī said: “Then I knew that he was not a king.” (1)

He would sometimes lie on his back, placing one leg over the other. He would lean against a cushion, sometimes reclining on his left side and sometimes on his right. When he needed support while going out because of weakness, he would lean on one of his Companions.

Chapter
His Guidance When Relieving Himself (2)

When entering the privy, he would say:

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from male and female devils, and from the foul, impure, accursed Satan.” (3)

When leaving, he would say:

(1) Mentioned by Ibn Ishāq, as quoted by Ibn Hishām in al-Sīra (2:580), and reported by Ahmad (19381) in the lengthy hadith of ‘Adī ibn Hātim concerning his conversion to Islam. Its chain includes ‘Abbād ibn Hubaysh, whom no one declared trustworthy, although Ibn Hibbān included him in al-Thiqāt. See the comments of the editors of al-Musnad. (2) ص reads: “hājatihi (his need).” (3) Reported by al-Bukhārī (142, 6322), Muslim (375), and others, from Anas through ‘Abd al-‘Azīz ibn Suhayb, without the addition “the foul, impure, accursed Satan.” This addition occurs in some weak hadiths, including one reported by al-Tabarānī in al-Du‘ā’ (365) and al-Awsat (8825), and by Ibn al-Sunnī in ‘Amal al-Yawm wa-l-Layla (1:19). Its chain is weak, and Abū Zur‘a graded it weak, as recorded in ‘Ilal Ibn Abī Hātim (13). Another is reported by Ahmad (19286), Abū Dāwūd (6), Ibn Mājah (296), and al-Tabarānī (5:204), from Zayd ibn Arqam. However, the transmissions from Qatāda differ, and on that account al-Tirmidhī identified a defect in it after hadith (5), as did al-Bukhārī, as recorded in al-‘Ilal al-Kabīr (p. 23). Abū Zur‘a preferred the hadith transmitted by ‘Abd al-‘Azīz ibn Suhayb from Anas—which al-Bukhārī and Muslim reported—to the report from Zayd ibn Arqam. See al-Da‘īfa (4189) and the commentary on al-Musnad (19286). The author will discuss it again in the chapter on the Prophet’s guidance, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, concerning remembrance of Allah when entering the privy (2:454).
