Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

the heavens and Lord of the earth (1), and Lord of the mighty Throne (2), Splitter of grains and fruit stones, Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel and the Quran; I seek refuge in You from the evil of every evil being whose forelock You hold. You are the First, and nothing precedes You; You are the Last, and nothing comes after You. You are the Manifest, and nothing is above You; You are the Hidden, and nothing is beneath You. Settle our debts for us and free us from poverty.”

When he awoke during the night, he would say: “There is no god but You. Glory be to You! O Allah, I ask You to forgive my sin, and I ask You for Your mercy. O Allah, increase me in knowledge, and do not let my heart deviate after You have guided me. Grant me mercy from Yourself; indeed, You are the Bestower” (3).

When he awoke from sleep, he would say: “Praise be to Allah, who has brought us to life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection” (4). He would then clean his teeth with a tooth-stick. Sometimes he would recite the last ten verses (5) of Āl ‘Imrān, beginning with His words, “Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth,” and continuing to the end of the surah [verses: 190–200]. He would also say:

(1) ع: “rabb al-samāwāt wa-l-ard” (Lord of the heavens and the earth). (2) ص, ج, مب, ن: “rabba al-‘arsh” (Lord of the Throne), without the preceding conjunction wa (and). (3) Reported by Abū Dāwūd (5061), Ibn Nasr in Qiyām al-Layl (p. 108), al-Nasā’ī in al-Kubrā (10635), and al-Tabarānī in al-Du‘ā’ (762), from ‘Ā’ishah. Its chain includes ‘Abd Allāh ibn al-Walīd al-Tujībī, concerning whom al-Dāraqutnī said, as recorded in Su’ālāt al-Barqānī (270): “His narrations are not usable for corroboration.” Nevertheless, Ibn Hibbān (5531) and al-Hākim (1981) graded it sahīh (authentic), while al-Hāfiz graded it hasan (good) in Natā’ij al-Afkār (1:116). He described ‘Abd Allāh ibn al-Walīd as an Egyptian narrator whose reliability is disputed, though he assessed him as weak in al-Taqrīb. (4) Reported by al-Bukhārī (6312) and Muslim (2711), from Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamān. Its first part has already been cited. (5) ك: “al-āyāt al-awākhir min ākhir” (the final verses from the end of). A later hand then crossed out al-awākhir (final). In ع, the reading was “āyāt …” (verses …), which a later hand corrected to the reading adopted here from ص, ج, and مب.
