Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

In Sunan Abī Dāwūd (1), Abd Allāh ibn Abbās said:
“I saw the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, wearing the finest of garments.”

In Sunan al-Nasā’ī (2), Abū Rimtha said:
“I saw the Prophet (3), may Allah bless him and grant him peace, delivering a sermon while wearing two green cloaks.”

A green cloak is one with green stripes; in this respect, it is exactly like the red outfit. Whoever understands the red outfit to have been solid red should therefore say that the green cloak was solid green—yet no one says this.

The pillow of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was (4) made of leather and stuffed with palm fibre (5). Those who abstain from the clothing, food and marriage that Allah has permitted, out of asceticism and devotion, are opposed by another group who wear only the finest clothes and eat only the most delicate food. Out of arrogance and haughtiness, they will not countenance wearing coarse clothing or eating coarse food. The way of both groups (6) is contrary to the way of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Hence the statement of

(1) No. 4037. Also reported at greater length by al-Tabarānī (12878, 12884) and al-Hākim (2:179; 4:299). Its chain of transmission is hasan (good). Al-Hākim graded it authentic, and al-Diyā’ selected it (10:416). (2) In al-Mujtabā (1572) and al-Kubrā (1794). Also reported by Abd Allāh ibn Ahmad in Zawā’id al-Musnad (7111), Abū Dāwūd (4065, 4206), and al-Tirmidhī (2812), who graded it hasan (good). Ibn Hibbān (5995) and al-Hākim (2:607) graded it authentic. (3) Kāf, ‘Ayn: “rasūl Allāh” (“the Messenger of Allah”). (4) Thus in the manuscripts and the Indian edition. Other editions read “kānat” (“was,” with feminine agreement). (5) Reported by al-Bukhārī (6456) and Muslim (2082), from Ā’isha, may Allah be pleased with her. (6) Kāf, ‘Ayn: “fa-kilā al-tā’ifatayn” (“thus, both groups”). The masculine form kilā likewise occurs in all the manuscripts and printed editions in place of the feminine form “kiltā al-tā’ifatayn” (“both groups”). There are many parallels in the works of the author and his teacher, reflecting the influence of colloquial usage. See my commentary on Tarīq al-Hijratayn (2:505).
