Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

As for the report in the hadith of the migration (1) that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came to Abū Bakr with his head covered in the midday heat, he did so on that occasion only to remain unnoticed; thus, he did it out of necessity.

Covering his head in this manner was not his usual practice. Anas did mention that he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, frequently wore a head covering (2), but he would do this—and Allah knows best—only when needed because of the heat or similar circumstances. Moreover, covering the head in this manner is not the same as wearing a taylasān (3).

Most of the clothing worn by the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and his Companions was woven from cotton, though they sometimes wore garments woven from wool or linen.

Abū al-Shaykh (4) al-Asbahānī (5) related, through an authentic chain of transmission, that Hābis ibn Ayyūb (6) said: Al-Salt ibn Rāshid came into the presence of Muhammad ibn Sīrīn wearing a woollen robe, a woollen waist-wrapper, and a woollen turban. Muhammad recoiled from him and said: “I think

(1) Reported by al-Bukhārī (3905, 5807), from ‘Ā’isha. (2) Reported by al-Tirmidhī in al-Shamā’il (33, 126). The hadith is weak. Its sources will be discussed fully in the chapter on the Prophet’s guidance—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—concerning fitra (natural disposition) and related matters (p. 188). (3) The author’s remarks on wearing the taylasān (a type of cloak) have been challenged. See Fath al-Bārī and the other sources mentioned above. (4) The printed editions read “al-Shaykh Abū Ishāq,” which is incorrect. (5) In his Akhlāq al-Nabī (The Character of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace), 2:234. (6) This is the reading in the manuscripts designated Qāf and Jīm. Sād reads “Halīs,” with the query mark Zā’ above it, meaning “check.” Kāf reads “Khalīs.” Someone has defaced the reading in ‘Ayn. The printed editions read “Jābir ibn Ayyūb.” Abū al-Shaykh’s book reads “jalīsun li-Ayyūb” (a companion of Ayyūb); the narrator is unidentified.
