through their chains of transmission from Anas ibn Mālik that the king of the Romans presented the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with a mustaqa (fur coat) of fine silk, which he wore. Anas said, “It is as though I can still see his hands moving to and fro.”
Al-Asma‘ī said, “Masātiq are fur garments (1) with long sleeves.” Al-Khattābī (2) said, “It seems that this fur coat was edged (3) with fine silk, since a fur garment cannot itself be silk.”
Section (4)
He, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, purchased trousers, apparently intending to wear them. It has been reported in more than one hadith that he wore trousers (5), and they used to wear trousers with his permission.
(1) The source manuscripts read “firā (fur garments),” written with a final alif maqsūra.
(2) In Ma‘ālim al-Sunan (4:191), from which al-Asma‘ī’s statement is quoted. See also Gharīb Abī ‘Ubayd (1:283).
(3) Ma‘ālim al-Sunan reads “mukaffafa (edged).” Kaffafa al-qamīs bi-l-harīr (to edge a tunic with silk) means to add silk edging to its hem, sleeves, and neck opening. Kifāf al-thawb (the edging of a garment) denotes its border and edges.
(4) The passage from “He wore the edged fur coat …” to this point is absent from Jīm and was added in the margin of Sād. This passage, too, is therefore among the author’s later additions.
(5) Al-Shumunnī states in his marginal commentary on al-Shifā by al-Qādī ‘Iyād (1:133): “Al-Hady states that he wore them. They said: ‘This is a slip of the pen.’” Perhaps Ibn al-Qayyim meant the report transmitted by Abū Ya‘lā (6162) and al-Tabarānī in al-Awsat (6594), from Abū Hurayra, which includes: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, do you indeed wear trousers?” He replied, “Yes, when travelling and at home, by night and by day. I have been commanded to cover myself, and I have found nothing that provides better covering.” This report is very weak; indeed, Ibn al-Jawzī included it in al-Mawdū‘āt (3:45). See also al-Da‘īfa by al-Albānī (1:204–206).
