He also had a hundred sheep. He did not wish (1) their number to increase; whenever the shepherd delivered a young animal, he slaughtered (2) a sheep in its place.
He had seven milk goats tended by Umm Ayman.
Chapter
The Clothing of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace
He had a turban called al-Sahāb (“the Cloud”), which he gave to ‘Alī to wear. He would wear it beneath his cap (3). He also wore the cap without a turban, and the turban without a cap.
When he wore a turban, he would let its end hang between his shoulders, as Muslim related in his Sahīh (4)
(1) Thus in S, J, Mukhtasar Ibn Jamā‘a (p. 141), and ‘Uyūn al-Athar (1:141). Q, K, ‘A, and Mb read: “And he did not wish.”
(2) S and J read: “Whenever he delivered a young animal, the shepherd slaughtered”; K and ‘A read: “Whenever the shepherd delivered a young animal, the shepherd slaughtered.” The adopted reading, from Q and Mb, agrees with the two sources mentioned above. This hadith was related from Laqīt ibn Sabra by al-Shāfi‘ī in al-Umm (2:60), Ahmad (nos. 16384, 17846), al-Bukhārī in al-Adab al-Mufrad (no. 166), and Abū Dāwūd (no. 142). Ibn Hibbān (no. 1054) and al-Hākim (4:110) graded it authentic.
(3) Thus in all the manuscripts; this is a slip of the pen. It resembles the examples of reversal cited in grammar books, such as: “I put the cap into my head,” “The garment pierced the nail,” and “The glass broke the stone!” Mukhtasar Ibn Jamā‘a (p. 128) reads: “He would wear lātiya caps beneath it.” The Indian edition and others read: “He would wear it and wear the cap beneath it.” This is a correction by a copyist or publisher.
(4) No. 1359/453, through Abū Usāma, from Musāwir al-Warrāq, from Ja‘far ibn ‘Amr ibn Hurayth, from his father. The wording of this hadith varies: most of its transmission routes do not mention letting the turban’s end hang down, while some add that this occurred on the day of the Conquest. Perhaps the more likely wording of ‘Amr ibn Hurayth’s hadith mentions neither detail. See Sahīh Muslim (1359/452); Musnad al-Humaydī (no. 576); Ibn Abī Shayba (nos. 25450, 25481); Sunan Abī Dāwūd (no. 4077); Shamā’il al-Tirmidhī (nos. 115, 116); al-Sunan al-Kubrā by al-Nasā’ī (nos. 9674, 9675); Sunan Ibn Mājah (nos. 2821, 3587); Musnad Abī Ya‘lā (nos. 1459, 1460); Akhlāq al-Nabī (The Character of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace) by Abū al-Shaykh (2:187); and Dalā’il al-Nubuwwa by al-Bayhaqī (5:68).
