al-Shāfi‘ī in a verse, saying:
“The horses are Sakb, Luhayf, Sabha, Zarib,
Lizāz, Murtajiz, Ward—with secrets of their own.”
His son, Imam ‘Izz al-Dīn ‘Abd al-‘Azīz Abū ‘Umar—may Allah honour him through obedience to Him—related this to me on his authority (1).
It is said that he had fifteen other horses, though these are disputed (2).
The two sides of his saddle were made of palm fibre.
Among his mules was Duldul, a grey mule given to him by al-Muqawqis. He also had another mule called Fidda, given to him by Farwa al-Judhāmī; a grey mule given to him by the ruler of Ayla; and another given to him by the ruler of Dūmat al-Jandal. It is also said that the Negus gave the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, a mule which he used to ride (3).
Among his donkeys was ‘Ufayr, which was grey, given to him by al-Muqawqis, king of the Copts; and another donkey given to him by Farwa al-Judhāmī.
It is reported that Sa‘d ibn ‘Ubāda gave the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, a donkey, which he rode (4).
