Ibn ‘Abbās, who said: “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had a sword with a hilt of (1) silver and a silver pommel, called Dhū al-Faqār. He had a bow called al-Sadād, a quiver called al-Jum‘, a coat of mail trimmed with copper called Dhāt al-Fudūl, a spear called al-Nab‘ā’ (2), a shield called al-Dafn (3), and a white shield called al-Mūjiz. He had a black horse called al-Sakb, a saddle called al-Rāj (4), a grey mule called Duldul, a she-camel called al-Qaswā’, and a donkey called Ya‘fūr. He had a rug called al-Kard (5), a short spear called al-Namir (6), and a small leather water vessel called al-Sādir.
(1) Only MB has “min” (of), also found in al-Mu‘jam al-Kabīr and al-Majrūhīn.
(2) S and ‘A have the dotted letter ghayn. The copyist may have mistaken the mark indicating an undotted letter for a dot. This is the spear previously called al-Nab‘a.
(3) This is the reading in S, J, and Majma‘ al-Zawā’id (5:272). K and ‘A read “al-Dhaqn,” as does al-Mu‘jam al-Kabīr. In Q, the word has no distinguishing dots. N reads “al-Daqn,” as does Jāmi‘ al-Masā’il (7:131). Al-Majrūhīn reads “al-Farqad,” possibly a corruption. In Ithāf al-Sāda (7:134), al-Zabīdī specifies dhāl and fā’, then says: “Some copies have qāf instead of fā’.” The root dh-f-n does not occur in al-Tāj or other dictionaries.
(4) This is the reading in ‘A and the commentary on Bahjat al-Mahāfil (2:173), whose commentator specifies undotted rā’ and jīm. The other manuscripts have undotted hā’, as do al-Majrūhīn and Jāmi‘ al-Masā’il. Al-Mu‘jam al-Kabīr and other works read “al-Dāj,” with dāl and jīm.
(5) This is the reading in all manuscripts, with the vocalization given in Q. J and N give the kāf a damma (u) … However, the commentator on Bahjat al-Mahāfil (2:173) specifies “kāf and zāy”: “al-Kazz.” This also appears to be the reading indicated in Ithāf al-Sāda (7:134). Al-Mu‘jam al-Kabīr and al-Bidāya wa-l-Nihāya (8:380) have rā’.
(6) K, ‘A, Q, MB, and N read “al-Qamar.” The adopted reading is from S and J, and also occurs in al-Mu‘jam al-Kabīr, al-Bidāya wa-l-Nihāya, Ithāf al-Sāda, and other works.
