which was given to him as a gift and bore a depiction of a figure. He placed his hand over it, and Allah made that figure disappear (1).
He had five spears: one (2) called al-Muthwī (3), another al-Mutathannī (4), a lance called al-Nab‘a, a large one called (5) al-Baydā’, and a small one resembling a walking stick, called al-‘Anaza. During the Eid festivals, the latter would be carried ahead of him until (6) it was planted in front of him. He would use it as a prayer barrier and pray facing it. He would sometimes walk with it as well.
He had an iron helmet called al-Muwashshah, adorned with brass (7), and another helmet called al-Sabūgh, or Dhū al-Subūgh (8).
(1) See Mukhtasar Ibn Jamā‘a (p. 126) and ‘Uyūn al-athar (2:386). Al-Awzā‘ī transmitted it from ‘Ā’isha, as recorded in Imtā‘ al-asmā‘ (7:153). Ibn Sa‘d transmitted a similar report from Makhūl in al-Tabaqāt (1:489).
(2) This is how it appears in the manuscripts, following colloquial usage.
(3) Sād and jīm read “al-Mustawī”; kāf and ‘ayn read “al-Mashwī,” with a dabba (a mark flagging a questionable reading) above it in kāf. Both are scribal corruptions of the reading adopted from qāf and nūn. Someone also supplied this correction in the margin of jīm. Ibn al-Athīr explains it in al-Nihāya (1:230): “It was so named because it immobilizes the person pierced by it, from thuwī (remaining).” See also Mukhtasar Ibn Jamā‘a (p. 126).
(4) This is how it is vocalized in qāf and nūn, and likewise in Mukhtasar Ibn Jamā‘a (p. 126), Imtā‘ al-asmā‘ (7:152), and other sources. Jīm reads “al-Munthanī,” and ‘ayn reads “al-Muthannī”; all these forms occur in the sources. The word’s consonantal dots are absent in sād, kāf, and mīm-bā’.
(5) Kāf and ‘ayn read “yuqālu lahā (called).”
(6) “Hattā (until)” is omitted from the printed edition.
(7) Shabah means brass.
(8) “Aw Dhū al-Subūgh (or Dhū al-Subūgh)” is omitted from kāf and ‘ayn. “Al-Subūgh” is corrupted to “masyūgh” in all the manuscripts. Sād and jīm also read “Dhū al-Suyūgh,” while mīm-bā’ and nūn read “Dhū al-Masbūgh.”
