with a disconnected chain of transmission (1). This is an important and weighty letter (2), covering many aspects of jurisprudence concerning zakat, blood money, legal rulings, major sins, divorce, emancipation, the rulings on praying in a single garment, sitting with the knees drawn up and held against the body by that garment, touching a copy of the Quran, and other matters. Imam Ahmad said: “There is no doubt that Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, wrote it” (3).
All the jurists have cited as evidence the provisions (4) it contains concerning the amounts of blood money.
Another was his letter to Banū Zuhayr (5).

Al-Hākim (4/90) said: “Both ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Azīz and al-Zuhrī, the leading scholar of his age, attested to the authenticity of this letter.” Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr said in al-Tamhīd (17/338–339): “It is a letter widely known among scholars of prophetic biography. Its contents are so well known among scholars that their familiarity with it makes a chain of transmission unnecessary, for the manner of its transmission resembles tawātur (mass transmission), owing to people’s acceptance and recognition of it.” See al-Talkhīs al-Habīr (5/2611–2616).
(4) ص, ج read: mimmā (“of what”).
(5) Reported by Yūnus ibn Bukayr in his additions to Sīrat Ibn Ishāq (p. 269), Abū ‘Ubayd in al-Amwāl (30), Ahmad (20740, 20737, 23077), Ibn Zanjawayh in al-Amwāl (80), Abū Dāwūd (2999), al-Nasā’ī (4146), and al-Bayhaqī (7/58), from an unnamed Bedouin who was one of the Companions of Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him. Ibn Hibbān (6557) graded it authentic, and Ibn al-Jārūd (1099) selected it for inclusion in his collection.
