Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

A dispute arose over this issue between two eminent scholars. One of them, Kamāl al-Dīn ibn Talhah (1), wrote a treatise arguing that the Prophet was born circumcised, marshalling in it all manner of unreliable hadith reports. Kamāl al-Dīn ibn al-‘Adīm (2) refuted his treatise and demonstrated that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was circumcised according to Arab custom. Since this practice was universal among the Arabs, no specific report concerning his circumcision was needed. And Allah knows best.

The Mothers Who Nursed Him—may Allah bless him and grant him peace

Among them was Thuwaybah, a female client of Abū Lahab. She nursed him for several days and, with the milk she produced for her son Masrūh, also nursed Abū Salamah ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Abd al-Asad al-Makhzūmī alongside him. She also nursed his uncle Hamzah ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib along with them. There is disagreement over whether she embraced Islam; Allah knows best.

Then Halīmah al-Sa‘diyyah nursed him with the milk she produced for her son ‘Abd Allāh, the brother of Anīsah and Judāmah (3)—the latter known as al-Shaymā’—all children of al-Hārith ibn ‘Abd al-‘Uzzā ibn Rifā‘ah al-Sa‘dī. There is disagreement over whether his foster parents embraced Islam; Allah knows best.

(1) He is Kamāl al-Dīn Muhammad ibn Talha Abū Sālim al-Qurashī al-Shāfi‘ī (d. 652 AH). Ibn Hajar mentions in al-Fath (11:89) that his book consisted of a single fascicle. (2) He died in 660 AH. His refutation was a single fascicle entitled al-Mulha fī al-Radd ‘alā Ibn Talha, also mentioned by Ibn Hajar. The author quoted from it in Tuhfat al-Mawdūd (pp. 300–305). (3) The manuscripts read “Jadhāma,” with dotted dhāl (dh); this may be a scribal error. This spelling also occurs in some sources, but I have found no one who explicitly specifies it. The forms recorded are “Khidhāma,” with khā’ (kh) vocalized with i; “Judāma,” with jīm (j) vocalized with u and undotted dāl (d); and “Hudhāfa,” with undotted hā’ (h), dotted dhāl (dh), and fā’ (f). See al-Rawd (2:163) and Gharīb al-Siyar by al-Khushanī (p. 55).
