for our Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is found in the hadith of the Night Journey (1).
Some have added an eighth form: Allah speaking to him (2) face to face, without a veil (3). This follows the view of those who hold that he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saw his Lord, Blessed and Exalted be He. This is a matter of disagreement among the early and later generations, although the majority of the Companions—indeed, all of them—held ‘Ā’ishah’s view, which ‘Uthmān ibn Sa‘īd al-Dārimī (4) reported as the consensus of the Companions.
Section on His Circumcision—May Allah Bless Him and Grant Him Peace
There are three differing views concerning it (5):
(1) Reported by al-Bukhārī (3887, 4710, 349) and Muslim (164, 170, 163), respectively, from Anas ibn Mālik reporting from Mālik ibn Sa‘sa‘a, from Jābir, and from Anas ibn Mālik reporting from Abū Dharr, may Allah be pleased with them. The author will discuss this in the section on the military campaigns.
(2) “Lahu” (to him) is omitted in ك and ع.
(3) Walī al-Dīn ibn al-‘Irāqī said: “It seems that Ibn al-Qayyim took this from al-Suhaylī’s al-Rawd.” See al-Mawāhib al-Ladunniyya (1:127–128) and al-Zurqānī’s commentary on it (1:430), both of which discuss these forms of revelation. See also al-Rawd (2:396). Al-Suhaylī said: “These are seven forms in which revelation descended upon Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. I have not seen anyone compile them in this manner.”
(4) In al-Naqd ‘alā al-Marīsī (2:738, al-Rushd edition). See the forthcoming section on the Night Journey and Ascension. See also Ijtimā‘ al-Juyūsh al-Islāmiyya (p. 22) and al-Tibyān fī Aymān al-Qur’ān (p. 383).
(5) The author discussed these views and their supporting arguments in detail in Tuhfat al-Mawdūd (pp. 296–305). One manuscript of Ibn Kathīr’s al-Bidāya wa-l-Nihāya (3:388, Hajr edition) contains the following: “I say: I have seen a treatise on this subject by Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyya, in which he rejected all these accounts, judged them weak, and declared some of them fabricated. He said: ‘The correct account is that he was simply circumcised as boys are circumcised: his grandfather ‘Abd al-Muttalib circumcised him and held a feast to which he gathered Quraysh. And Allah knows best.’”
