with some saying that it began on the eighth of Rabī‘ al-Awwal, in the forty-first year reckoned from the Year of the Elephant. This is the view of the majority (1). Others say that it began in Ramadan, citing Allah’s words:
“(184) The month of Ramadan in which [the Quran] was revealed” [al-Baqarah: 185].
They say that when Allah first honoured him with prophethood, He revealed the Quran to him. A number of scholars held this view, including Yahyā al-Sarsarī, who says in his poem rhyming in n:
He reached forty, and from him shone
The sun of prophethood in Ramadan (2).
Those who held the first view said that it was the sending down of the Quran that occurred in Ramadan: Allah sent it down (3) all at once, on the Night of Decree, to the House of Honour, then revealed it (4) in instalments as events unfolded over twenty-three (5) years (6).
Another group said that “in which it was revealed” means concerning Ramadan, its exalted status, and the obligation to fast during it (7).
