It states that Allah commanded Abraham to sacrifice ‘his son, his firstborn,’ and in another wording, ‘his only son’ (1). The People of the Book, like the Muslims, have no doubt that Ishmael was his firstborn son (2). What misled those who hold this view is the statement in the Torah they possess: ‘Sacrifice your son Isaac’ (3).” He said: “This addition is part of their distortion and falsehood, for it contradicts the statement: ‘Sacrifice your son, your firstborn and your only son.’ But the Jews envied the descendants of Ishmael for this honor, and wished it to be theirs, to transfer it to themselves and claim it exclusively (4), rather than allow it to belong to the Arabs. Yet Allah insists on bestowing His bounty upon those entitled to it.”
How can it be maintained that Isaac was the son intended for sacrifice, when Allah Most High had given Isaac’s mother glad tidings of him and of his son Jacob? Allah Most High relates that when the angels came to Abraham with glad tidings, they said:
“Indeed, we have been sent to the people of Lot. (70) His wife was standing, and she laughed, so We gave her glad tidings
