Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

to them, exalted is He, with two kinds of nearness (1): the first is the nearness of His assured response during that hour (2); the second is His special nearness to those gathered at Arafah, whom He extols before His angels. The hearts of the believers sense these things and grow still stronger, increasing in joy, gladness, and delight, and in hope for their Lord’s bounty and generosity. For these (3) and other reasons, standing at Arafah on a Friday is superior to doing so on other days.

As for the widely circulated claim among ordinary people that it is equivalent to seventy-two pilgrimages, it is false and has no basis in anything reported from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, or from any of the Companions or Successors. Allah knows best (4).

The point is that Allah, glorified is He, has chosen the purest of every category of created things, setting it apart for Himself and approving it above the rest. For He, exalted is He, is pure and loves only what is pure, and accepts only what is pure in deeds, speech, and charity. Thus, what is pure in everything is what He, exalted is He, chooses. His creation, however, encompasses both kinds.

(1) s reads: “nawʿay al-qurb (the two kinds of nearness).” (2) The passage “wa-yaqrubu minhum … al-sāʿa (and He draws near to them … that hour)” is omitted from k and ʿ owing to a scribal eye-skip. (3) k, ʿ, and mb read: “fa-hādhihi (thus these).” The sentence would therefore mean: “These and other considerations made standing at Arafah on Friday superior,” in accordance with the vocalization in the two manuscripts. (4) Al-Hāfiz states in Fath al-bārī (8/271): “As for what Razīn cited in his Jāmiʿ as a report attributed to the Prophet—‘The best day on which the sun has risen is the Day of Arafah when it coincides with Friday, and it is better than seventy pilgrimages on other occasions’—this is a hadith whose status I do not know, since he named neither the Companion who transmitted it nor anyone who recorded it. Rather, he inserted it into the hadith in al-Muwattaʾ (572, 1270), which he cited as a mursal report from Talha ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Kurayz. The aforementioned addition does not appear in any recension of al-Muwattaʾ.”
